Art Blog #21: Inktober Entry 2

It took a while for me to get the motivation to write about this entry. I'm already at my seventh entry now, but opposite to the fervor I felt in drawing, I felt unmotivated in writing. I wanted to write about many things—like the movies I just watched and the anime series I just finished, but it’s like I don't have enough will or desire to write down anything. That's why it took five days for me to finally start writing about the process of this entry.

So much for the rant dump, one of the reasons why I wasn’t able to share its process immediately is because of the lack of the output picture. I usually draw at night, and since my phone's camera isn't that good, I just take a picture of its final look during the day. I finished drawing him last October 2, and although I know I wasn't able to copy the reference accurately, I'm glad that at least I got to capture his dark vibes. Enough with the introduction, here's the process of drawing my entry for letter B—Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows.

The Process

1. First, I draw a rough drawing of him. I didn’t spend much time on sketching him because I have a reference that I followed.

2. Next, I erase the unnecessary details and retraced the parts that'll get inked later.

3. Now, to my favorite part, I started tracing the pencil drawing with the gel pen I have.

4. Since his face is gloomy and kinda gaunt-looking, I added shadows on some parts of his face, then I blended them with sweaty hands haha

5. Then I finally added the red color, just to make it a little bloody.

6. For the last touch, I used my marker's ink to paint his coat all black.

Voila! It’s finally done~

You’re probably wondering why I chose to draw him…well, the reason goes back to my elementary years. I was in fifth grade when I first watched it. Barnabas was far from your ideal man, and even in his younger years, he made mistakes, and ultimately, those mistakes doomed his fate, as well as the fate of the woman he loved. But despite that he's not that likable, I still definitely can’t forget how haunting and interesting the Dark Shadows movie was. It’s been ten years since I first watched that movie, yet I can still recall some of the scenes, which is a feat for me because I forget easily now. That’s why when I started this Inktober entries, I immediately added his character on my to-draw list, and thankfully I finally drew him.

I guess that’s enough sharing for now, so thanks for staying with me till here and hope to see you on my next Inktober sharing!
