The old warehouses of San José / Los antiguos almacenes de San José (eng-esp)

Hello, friends of #Hive. Today I'm going to show you one of my favorite places in Havana: The old San José warehouses.

These warehouses date back to 1885 and were built near the port to store sugar, rum, coffee, and other export products of the time.

The warehouses are over 300 meters long and 20 meters high. They used to store merchandise from several 19th-century cargo ships.

There are telephone offices and other tourist services. The new offices are noticeable by the contrast between the new materials and the original structure.

The construction used cutting-edge technology of the time and was directed by a Cuban architect, who created this frame of more than 3,000 tons of steel to support a reinforced concrete structure.
Otherwise, the project would not have withstood the ravages of the frequent tropical hurricanes that hit the island each year.

Today, the building has a completely different function. It now houses art.
Some of its areas host concerts and theater performances.
This is thanks to the Oficio de Isla project.

But what takes up the most space in this artistic warehouse are the crafts and the fine art galleries.

Thousands and thousands of works are displayed daily in these warehouses. Hundreds of artists and hundreds of drawing and painting styles are exhibited in these creative spaces.

Now, warehouses no longer stock sugar and rum. And if they do, they do so through the visual or performing arts.

Hola, amigos de #Hive. Hoy les voy a mostrar uno de mis lugares preferidos de La Habana: Los antiguos almacenes de San José.

Estos almacenes datan de 1885 y fueron construidos, cerca del puerto para el almacenaje del azúcar, ron, café y otros productos de exportación de la época.

Los almacenes tienen más de trescientos metros de largo y una veintena de alto. Aquí almacenaban la mercancía de varios barcos cargueros del siglo XIX.

Hay oficinas de telefonía y otros servicios turísticos. Las oficinas nuevas se notan por el contraste de los nuevos materiales y la estructura original.

La construcción constó con la tecnología de punta de la época y fue dirigida por un arquitecto cubano, quien supo crear esta armazón de más de 3000 toneladas de acero para soportar una estructura de hormigón armado.
De lo contrario, la obra no soportaría los embates de los frecuentes huracanes tropicales que azotan cada año a la isla.

En la actualidad, el edificio tiene otra función completamente diferente. Ahora almacena Arte.
En algunas de sus áreas se realizan conciertos y presentaciones de obras de teatro.
Esto se hace gracia al proyecto Oficio de Isla.

Pero lo que más espacio se lleva en este almacén artístico, son las obras de artesanía y las galerías de artes plásticas.

Miles y miles de obras se muestran a diario en estas naves. Cientos de artistas y cientos de estilos de dibujo y pintura se exponen en estos espacios creativos.

Ahora los almacenes ya no almacenan azúcar y ron. Y si lo hacen, lo hacen desde las artes plásticas o escénicas.
