Numbers 30:1 -8

But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the LORD shall forgive her" (Numbers 30:8).

🖊️ COMMENTARY

There is a disturbing new trend in the church involving Christian wives in open rebellion to their husbands in the area of making vows in the church. A trending story on social media in September 2023 recounts how a Kenyan man hung himself in a church after his wife donated to a church all the money paid to the couple after executing a gardening contract.

To compound matters, the said wife did not even inform her husband of her intention before giving away the money neither did the husband know that she made any vow previously. When the man asked his wife to give him part of the money from the whole and she replied that she gave all the money to their local church, the man went into the church and hung himself in the roof of the church. What a wasted life!

Stories similar to, but sometimes less dramatic and drastic than this are all over the place, in our churches today, causing serious crises in our homes.

This reveals a lack of understanding about God's instructions concerning the spiritual and other God-related commitments a wife is allowed to make. It could also stem from sheer rebellion on the part of the wife. Today's text is very clear on what is allowed or disallowed to a wife.

Let wives study the scripture carefully and obey because it's not difficult to obey. Ministers can also help by ensuring that husbands are in agreement with their wives when such wives donate money or property to the church. This way, the enemy is not allowed to tears families apart for issues such as this. Let's take time to pray for families going through crises today.
