When it comes to Welfare Politics, Maybe Honesty is the Best Policy...?

Welfare Reform is badly needed in the UK..... ight now, one in ten working-age adults claims sickness or disability benefits, and half of the pension age welfare budget goes on sickness and disability.

And with the current political deadlock of no further tax raises, this simply isn't affordable....

The Triple Lock Headache

Right at the heart of all this is the state pension triple lock. It promises that pensions will go up each year by whichever is highest: inflation, average wage growth, or 2.5%. The Conservatives brought it in. Voters love it. But it costs a fortune, especially when inflation or wages spike. Year after year, those increases pile up into an expensive ongoing promise.

logically, the triple lock has to go. The country just can’t afford it forever, but the problem is that it's understandably popular with the over 60s, and these are the demographic most likely to vote.

And this is the rub when it comes to welfare politics: the priciest bits are all the ones politicians are scared to touch, because the people who benefit are organized and vote in droves.

So where does that leave Labour? Stick with a policy they know is flawed? Or take it on and risk getting hammered at the polls?

Making the Case for a bold political decision...

Maybe Labour's mistake was just not being honest about the affordability of welfare expenditure from the outset. Maybe if Rachel Reeves had stood up in the Budget and said, plainly, that it was time to scrap the triple lock, people might have believed her. Even if they didn’t like it.

This COULD have meant that Labour would be fairing better today than they are, according to what some political scientists call it the “credibility dividend” theory - the idea that if you come across as straight-talking and clear, people might trust you more, even if your policies sting a little.

And this approach would definitely be necessary to make the kind of big changes that are almost certainly going to be required to get the country back on track....

Honesty the Best Policy...?

Spending on Welfare has been growing faster than the economy's ability to afford it for a while now and ixing welfare means facing some pretty difficult trade-offs... : fairness to pensioners, looking after the sick, fairness between generations. T

And to date Labour's approach has been to simply pretend these trade-offs don’t exist, and look where that has got them!

Maybe just maybe there’s a reward for being clear and honest, even when the news isn’t good.
