Wage inflation above price inflation, but is it enough...?!?

Wages growth in the UK has just over taken inflation for the first time in 2 years according to this BBC News Report.

Screenshot 2023-10-17 at 18.59.57.png

In August 2023, the latest month for which data is available, wages grew by 7.8% on average compared to just 7.1% for inflation.

The average annual inflation figures for the last three years have been:

  • For 2021 - 2.5%
  • For 2022 - 7.9%
  • 2023 So far - approximately 9%

And the minimum wage increase have been roughly on par with that, just about keeping up.

  • 2% From April 2021 to April 2022
  • 6% from April 2022 to April 2023
  • 9% from April 2023 until April 2024.

So any increase in the minimum wage has just about allowed people to keep up with the increasing cost of living, assuming they are earning enough to cover their basics!

Which I worked out yesterday IS NOT THE CASE!

So there is something of a lag going on, and this increase in wages is going to have to continue for a good year to offset money lost to debt to keep people going over the last few years!

A simple equation...

While this is welcome news, and will be a relief for many, this clearly benefits higher income earners more than lower income earners.

For example...

  • If you're earning £20k A year, then a 10% increase = £2000 extra.
  • If you're earning £40K a year, a 10% increase = £4000 extra.

And the thing with the recent cost of living increase which has affected the really basic things in life: fuel, housing, food, transport.... that £2K a year extra gained from the increase in the minimum wage (roughly equivalent to £20K a year, just under) has been 100% sucked up by the increase in cost of these basics.

However for someone on double the wage experiencing the same increase, they've had the choice of either spending their extra income for leisure or building up a buffer!

Conclusion...

I think we need the next Minimum Wage increase to be well ABOVE inflation to make up for this difference.

People need some breathing space to catch up.

Then again, maybe that would just kick start price inflation again.

What a mess, but that's the economy for you, I guess!

I expect a lot of people were overdue for a raise. Those tend to come infrequently so you can be lagging behind inflation for a while. There is a massive difference between the less well off and the wealthy as the latter will mostly have plenty of scope to economise. If you are on minimum wage you will spend most of it on essentials.

I think we are seeing increasing inequality in the UK for sure! I think you spend pretty much ALL yer money on essentials if you're on the minimum wage, not a lot left after! If anything.

Here in our country people are still earning less money and their expenses are too high which is causing problems and people are forced to live in debt.

In the us u can do referral bonuses for bank accounts and repeat them each year making a full time salary equivalent pretty easily for a min wage position with much less time. Been doing it as a side hustle for 10 years its super easy just takes a bit of out of the box thinking to trigger some ddp bonuses and meet the requirements like using credit cards to deposit say 50K for 3 months to get 1K you can charge yourself using a intercompany loc using the CC and use the 0% for 12-21 months so the deposit costs nothing especially using a new card to get a 200-1500 sign up cc bonus as well so you make that plus cash back which covers the 2.9% cc cost and lets you pay the min payment to principle only for that time while you earn the deposit bonus on one and first send it via push ach from your LLC to your self as a transfer to a new account for personal purposes and get a bonus for that account and keep doing that over and over with money that costs nothing and once it needs to be repaid you will have earned a lot from bank bonuses, brokerage sign ups, cc bonuses, interest in a savings high yield while not used in bonuses and the cc points bonus as well to cover the charge. As long as your credit is decent and you put down a decent amount of income and don't have much debt (under 30%) 0% you can with a long good credit history and business credit to so you can get that as well at 0% promos and get bonuses to. One of my LLCs only purpose is to get bank bonuses by sending me and 4 other ppl ach transfers as a loan and they pay it back after the bonus is received (i do since its my family) but if you have a family you can take a 100 dollar sign up bonus you get and refer your spouse and any kids say 2 and get 7X the 100 as the bonus gives you a referral of 100 for all 3 ppl as well as 100 to each person so you just cover the taxes and a small amount of passive income take the rest earn net 5-6X if you would have done any alone and there are plenty of 500 dollar ones I do which are 2500-3000 dollar paydays and can be done with a family of 4 or if less just the amounts are less like a couple would be 3X ish etc. Its a super easy way to make money and pretty much no one does it, I know one other person who makes maybe 30K a year just doing it casually with his other business as a ticket broker as he has high cash volume like 5 million he can get a lot of bonuses and cc bonuses and also use the 1-2 m profits to get the big brokerage bonuses for things that he would do anyway but you can do the smaller bonuses and if your family wants to make extra money in the US just do them between each other and get them from the links you can find online. I am making a website for this but ill have a link on my page as soon as its done and its a great way to fund gaming accounts if you do the first 5 bonuses you can make about 250 for yourself and then add the multiples to figure out how much extra with a family you get. I did not do many last year so this year I will be able to do pretty much all of them and that is when I am going to make the website as I do the links and update them as it goes and eventually the bonuses if you do all of them on the site will give one person about 50K and a family 50K 5X-6X and do the math , read the fine print etc if you dont think it works you wont be able to say it does not if you really think about it. When you see it you will smack your head bc the hourly rate is likely a ton more than many jobs I know it blew mine out of the water.
