The Rip-Off Cost of a University Degree
Getting a university degree in England these days comes with a hefty price tag. The majority of students leave university which large five figure debt sums and for anyone who started between 2012 and 2023, things look even rougher.
Most recent grads walk away owing tens of thousands in student loans. Right now, once you start earning above £28,470, the government takes 9% of everything you make over that line, direct from your pack packet.
That's a 29% income tax rate effectively at that level. And if you do go into the upper band, you'd effectively be paying out at 49% until the loan is cleared.
The Brutal “Plan 2” Loans
About 5.8 million people are currently stuck with plan-2 loans. Interest on these loans is set at 3% above inflation (RPI). With inflation so high, the interest piles up fast. Unless you’re making at least £66,000 a year, your payments don’t even keep up with the interest, so your debt just keeps growing, even as you pay.
Basically, unless you’re earning a small fortune, your loan balance gets bigger, not smaller.
Final Thoghts...
With the way things are set up now, you have to wonder whether a degree really worth the price?
If the student loan system doesn’t get a serious overhaul, more and more graduates will feel like their education cost them way more than they bargained for.
I clearly remember the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when Clegg did a 180 on the Lib Dem manifesto promise not to support tuition fees. They ended up in a coalition with the Tories and instead of standing on his party principals and going against the govt vote he cravenly submitted for a crumb of power.
That destroyed the only faith I had left in any viable alternative to the Tory/Labour see-saw.
If I was leaving school now, I'm not sure third level education would be a viable option for me, I'd seriously weigh up the cost/benefit, but here is the thing, apart from my degree , university was valuable "growing up space" for me, my horizons were broadened and I gained some much needed maturity during that time.
And it was by no means a free lunch, I had no tuition fees to pay, but I had rent and food ( and a few beers) to buy ( I did not qualify for a maintenance grant because I came from Ireland and hadn't lived here). I had one job in first year, my parents could afford more support then, after that it was two jobs, f/t uni and working all holidays.
This is just another example of the slow grind down for ordinary people. Wealthy people always had escape velocity, but lower down the financial spectrum a following breeze is often the only chance you have to break the mould.

I was of a generation who got a grant that we didn't have to pay off. My kids have been in the new system so they will have these debts, but they seem resigned to that. I think the interest should be set to a fair price so they stand a chance of paying it off. Of course when tuition fees were introduced all the universities set them at the maximum rate so that didn't help matters.
We have various politicians saying that people should not do 'less useful' degrees, however you measure that. There is a case for more apprenticeships and other alternatives. The idea is supposed to be to give people to skills they need to have a career and, hopefully, a decent quality of life. It should not be about milking the younger generation.
Ah yeah - the 'arts' was deemed less useful here, then science - so it depends on how the government sees it. I mean educated people can argue with you, right?

fucking joke. Here our starting debt is a lot less, and it's just indexed to inflation I think, you don't get charged interest. I paid off my arts/teaching degree abut 15 years ago - just came out of my wage, so it wasn't that bad though it was a relief when it was over. Plus you have to reach a threshhold to pay it at all. Still it's a big sting.

STOPIt's a vicious cycle. Subsidies to education per early raise spending, and thus costs. Students paying tuition need more money, and often turn to loans. These loans become an albatross around their necks, especially when the economy tanks and they are the first laid off.

Hello everyone I hope you are all good and well today in this post is some of the evidence to prove my case
If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

My kid - now adult is in their first year of university and I can confirm, its costly. On the plus side she decided to stay on campus and opted for a shared room. She luckily didn't end up with any roommate so she got a decent size room to herself. I do wonder if the private rooms are smaller. I noticed when visiting her the same was true for many others. My mind instantly went to the thought process of -- it must suck to be one of the students that shelled out extra for a private room when most those who opted for shared room got a private one anyways.
