Splinterlands Strategies: Monsters Lose all Abilities and No Magic!

With the monsters lose all abilities ruleset the standard strategy is to opt for magic attacks because these are the only ones which avoid shields (unless you are using the most excellent Raith and his void shield.

However I recently had a three ruleset battle in which magic was banned and so the only options were to go for melee or ranged.

I figured that Possibilus was a good choice given his reach and trample abilities meaning only the third card would sit idle if I chose a third melee attack, which allowed me to opt for a monster with much higher health and shields compared to my option with ranged attacks, also better speed.

And it worked a treat given my opponent's choice of a minus one ranged attack summoner.

The line up...

  1. Legionnaire Alva - decent shields, health and attack.
  2. Demon Shark - similar health shields and attack
  3. Flying squid - in third because only health and no shileds
  4. Frog thing - ranged attack one, with the highest health
  5. Ranged attack two.
  6. Ranged attack 3 with the highest damaged.

The rulesets were divine shield, monsters lose all abilities and no magic, 39 mana.

The battle

This battle is a nice example of a strategy that takes advantage of Possibilus the Wise and his trample ability.

Round 1 - I lose Alva
Round 2 - I take out my opponent's Gargoyle, and get trample one.
Round 3 - I take out Gough and get trample two. I also lose my Demon Shark
Round 4 - I take out the little Archer, no trample!
Round 5 - I take out the Gargoyle
Round 6 - It's all over I take out the final two monsters!

Battle analysis and final thoughts...

My opponent didn't make any terrible mistakes, I think he just made his best, rational selections based on what he had, but my superior summoner added on significant health and a few extra attacks.

Granted it's down to luck how many times trample triggers, I got 2/3 possible tramples.

However I think the main reason for winning is my having more health and shields up front and less monster downtime. After we both lost our first monster, I had 5 monsters dealing damage, all with 2 extra health, my opponent only had 4 given that the ranged card in front was no damage, and that's a lot of difference!

We're talking about 5 points difference per round!

This example just goes to shows (once again) the crucial importance of selecting the correct summoner for the ruleset.
