VAMPIRES (Part 2)
After a hoard of bats head to the church, the four friends know that their fears weren't just make-believe...
The four of us shared looks between each other.
“Oh, they’re gonna be there alright,” I mumbled.
“And we’re gonna catch ‘em.” Levi was giving that church tower a mean glare. “Let’s go!”
We were speed-walking as fast as we could with our heavy backpacks.
Christy rubbed her arms. Levi huffed and puffed. I soldiered on silently, the wind flowing through my hair.
Randy rubbed his belly and groaned. “Guys…can we slow down a bit? My stomach hurts, man.”
“Well, you shouldn’t have eaten so much, big-back!” I pulled my bookbag up and gave him a nod of disapproval.
“I only ate garlic bread…” Randy said weakly.
“Yeah, like eight pieces! Get away from me garlic breath!” Christy covered her nose and swiped at him until he fell back a bit to walk beside me. The stench of Randy’s breath burned my nostrils, but I had bigger things to deal with tonight. Mainly, the threat of death.
When we got to the church, the sky was a dim blue and the cicadas sang loudly from their hiding spots in the grass.
The church towered over us, the cross on the bell tower polking the sky. To the left of the entrance was one stained glass window, a beautiful pink background and angels flying to the sun. The window to the right had been cracked, and Levi peaked in it before turning back to us. “Ria, do you have the stakes?”
“Yep.” I took my bookbag off and slung it to the ground. “Let’s not take them out yet though. No need to scare the vampires off.”
Christy's head swiveled from the church, to the graveyard behind it, to the creepy woods across the street. “Did you see anyone in the church?” she asked Levi.
“No,” he answered. “Hopefully they didn’t see us coming.”
“They better not have, or this could be a major waste of time,” I sharpened the edge of a wooden stake.
