Tesla Master Plan
Hello!
Today I was revisiting Tesla’s Master Plan Part Deux. Elon Musk published it back in 2016, but many of the ideas are still very relevant today, especially when we think about the connection between technology, energy, and the future.
The first Master Plan (2006) was simple: build an expensive sports car, then use the money to build a more affordable car, then use that to build an even more affordable one. And all powered by clean energy. That strategy actually worked!
You can see Model S/X and Model 3/Y.
The second Master Plan goes beyond. Elon talks about expanding electric vehicles to cover all major forms of transport: trucks, buses, and also autonomous cars. He imagined a fleet of Teslas that could drive themselves and generate passive income for their owners when not in use. Basically, your car could become a robotaxi.
Another part of the plan was the integration of solar energy and batteries. Tesla wanted people to have solar roofs at home, connected to Powerwalls, charging their cars and living completely independent from the grid. A full ecosystem of clean energy.
Eight years later, some things are happening, some still in progress. Tesla Semi is real, though not yet at big scale. Solar roofs exist, but adoption is slower. Full self-driving is still under testing and not perfect, but each year it gets closer.
For me, what is impressive is the vision. Elon thinks in decades, not months. The plan is not just about cars, it’s about building a sustainable future where energy, transport, and technology work together.
Of course, not everything is smooth. Challenges are huge. Regulations, AI safety, production costs… But the direction is clear. The mission of Tesla is not to build cars. It is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
And in that mission, Master Plan Deux is still a map of where things are going.
I hope you have a great weekend!
