Your Witness Vote Matters

As noted above those who run for witness operate what is known as nodes (servers) to secure that the HIVE Blockchain is operating correctly and smoothly. Each account on HIVE has a total of 30 Witness Votes. That's right each of you can vote for 30 different witnesses. Some users utilize all their votes. Others (like me) vote sparingly (I think 30 votes is way too many but that is a discussion for another time). The top voted Witness of the HIVE chain do get paid and have the most control over the blockchain so make sure you don't hand out your vote willy nilly. Vote for those who you consider bring value to the chain. Of course the 30 votes are yours to vote however you please. If voting for willy nilly is what you want than by all means go ahead and do that.

RentMoney has been a slacker when it comes to Witness voting. In fact I been being a slacker when it comes to allot of things and am just now playing catch-up. Looking at my voting for Witness list I can see that it's empty (Yikes). So today is the day I rectify that. Of course I had votes placed in the past. The reason for their removal wasn't any action I took but rather an action that I didn't take. All Witness votes expire after 12 months. This is likely a safegaurd to make sure its active Hiven's who are contributing to who our top witnesses are. However I do think 12 months might be too short of a period. It takes allot of work to convince people to vote the first time around. Convincing them to do so time and time again likely isn't an easy task. I would like to purpose that the one year vote removal be increased to 3 years.

Edit:

It's possible your votes expiring is dependent on how you interact with the chain. If you use your Active key from time to time you might not have to worry. Still worth checking on every so often.

Above I have listed three Hive Frontends and included a direct link to the Witness voting page. Below I will also provide a quick step by step guide on how to get to the Witness voting section. The guide below is for the Hive.Blog frontend. Most other frontends will have similar steps in which will bring you to their witness page.

(2) Scroll to top of page
(3) Click the triple bar (≡)
(4) Scroll down to and click Vote For Witness

After following the above steps you will be brought to the Hive Blochchains Witness page. It is here where you can vote for your favorite Witness. Voting is easy, simply click the up arrow next to the Witness you want to vote for. If you can't find the Witness in the provided list its likely because the account you are looking for is outside the top 200 witnesses. To find such a witness you can type out the name of the account you are looking for in the designated area found at the bottom of the page. Doing so will then allow you to utilize your vote as you intended.

Voted for a Witness and they are no longer active. Has your view points changed and you want to remove one or more of your Witness votes. Maintaining and Updating your Witness votes is just as important as the initial voting process. If you feel as you want to remove your vote the Hive Network allows you to do just that. Its your vote and you can do with it as you please. The first screenshot shows the witness votes I placed today. I fully intend on casting some more but on whom is not fully decided yet. Are you a Witness? If so lets hear the reasons why the users of HIVE should vote for you. Provide any information and/or links to your Hive Blog / Hive Apps you helped create or maintain and if those stumbling upon this post like your reasoning you just might find yourself getting some extra votes on your witness account.

How Does RentMoney Decide Where To Place His Votes?

User acquisition and user retention. I'm big on both. The blockchain needs the talented individuals that can code and make it as great as it is. It also needs those who can bring new users and help retain them. I don't seek out what witnesses are doing and then vote. I interact on the chain naturally and if I come across a witness that is doing things that peek my interest; that is likely the start of getting my vote. Each and everyone of those voted on witnesses in my opening post screenshot has in one way or another helped with user retention and/or acquisition. One of them at current time doesn't have an active node but I cast a vote on them anyways, that's how big I am on acquisition and retention of those who interact on the Hive Blockchain.
