Holidays in Brazil: Luxury or Basic Right?

Wow, as soon as the year is half over, our minds start searching for the next holiday on the calendar, right? We live in this dilemma.

We live to work, and the routine is so heavy that we spend the week dreaming about the next day off (whether it's Friday or a holiday, lol). But then that question always arises, that serious question: is this one-day break from the hustle and bustle really worth it? For whom?

The Bill We Pay (and the One We Refuse to Pay)

There's always that talk that Brazil isn't moving forward because we stop so much. That every holiday is a loss, a dent in the economy, that productivity drops. And looking at it from one perspective, it actually makes sense. A day without production in a factory, "one day less of sales in commerce," all of this becomes a number, a statistic. It's a calculation that can be seen, calculated.

I don't think that's even true, to be honest. I think it's precisely during holidays that the economy thrives most, where sales occur at exorbitant prices, typically when people spend the most money on restaurants, travel, gifts, etc.

On top of that, we have the bill that almost no one writes down. The cost of burnout, anxiety, and exhaustion that has become the norm. The price of living on the edge, of thinking that proper sleep is a luxury, of not having time for family, friends, of doing absolutely nothing but work.

We don't see this bill in the newspaper, but we feel it in our skin, in our health, in our minds. Holidays, in this scenario, cease to be a luxury and become a basic necessity. It's the breather before drowning. It's us remembering that we work to live, not the other way around. And this pause, for me, is priceless.

I'd like to document a conversation I had with a friend of mine two years ago. He worked a 6x1 shift and suffered real symptoms: malnutrition, extreme fatigue, and seemed to be suffering from depression. Is it worth draining every last drop of a worker's energy for the sake of profit?

For Whom Is the Holiday Really "Worth It"?

Then we think: okay, for me, who's here on the run, the day off is totally worth it. It's a day to get my head and life in order. But what about the country?

Let's be honest: money doesn't disappear on the holiday; it just changes hands. Maybe the industry in the big city shuts down, but the neighboring tourist town, restaurants, gift shops (as I mentioned before), for example in Domingos Martins or Guarapari, is packed. The owner of the beach kiosk, who works hard all month, finally sees business increase. The inn hires an extra employee (usually a temporary one). The restaurant sells more.

Money leaves the big city and goes to tourism. For many people, holidays aren't what break their business, they're what saves the month. So, saying that holidays "break the economy" is only looking at a very small part of the story.

The Truth We Avoid Talking About

In the end, maybe the discussion isn't about having too many or too few holidays.

Perhaps the right question is: why is our normal work routine so unbearable that we desperately need so many escape valves?

Holidays have become a remedy for a disease we pretend not to see: the culture of exhaustion (workaholics, work ends up taking over the mind, the fear of being fired, the 6x1 schedule is exhausting, only scoring once more). We work more hours than we should, are constantly connected, and feel guilty about resting.

A rich country isn't just one with a high GDP. It's one with healthy people, people who can live, not just survive. And if that requires a few breaks throughout the year to recalibrate our souls and remember what it means to be human, then the answer is clear.

Feriado no Brasil: Luxo ou Direito Básico?

Putz, é só o ano passar da metade que a cabeça já começa a caçar o próximo feriado no calendário, né? A gente vive nesse dilema.

A gente vive pra trabalhar, e a rotina é tão pesada que a gente passa a semana sonhando com a próxima folga (seja a sexta feira ou um feriado kkkk). Mas aí sempre vem aquela dúvida, aquele papo sério: essa pausa de um dia no meio da correria vale a pena mesmo? Pra quem?

A Conta que a Gente Paga (e a que a gente se recusa a pagar)

Sempre tem aquela conversa de que o Brasil não vai pra frente porque a gente para muito. Que cada feriado é um prejuízo, um rombo na economia, que a produtividade cai. E olhando por um lado, até faz sentido. Um dia sem produção numa fábrica, "um dia a menos de vendas no comércio", tudo isso vira número, vira estatística. É uma conta que dá pra ver, dá pra calcular.

Acho que isso nem é verdade para ser sincero. Acho que é justamente em feriados que a economia mais acontece, onde a queima de estoque ocorre a preços exorbitantes, normalmente onde a população mais gasta dinheiro em restaurantes, viagens, presentes, etc.

Além disso temos a conta que quase ninguém põe no papel. O custo do burnout, da ansiedade, do esgotamento que virou a regra. O preço de viver no limite, de achar que dormir direito é luxo, de não ter tempo pra família, pros amigos, pra não fazer absolutamente nada além de trabalhar.

Essa conta a gente não vê no jornal, mas sente na pele, na saúde, na cabeça. O feriado, nesse cenário, deixa de ser um luxo e vira um item de primeira necessidade. É o respiro antes de afogar. É a gente lembrando que trabalha pra viver, e não o contrário. E essa pausa, pra mim, não tem preço.

Gostaria de documentar uma conversa que tive com um amigo meu a dois anos atrás, ele trabalhava na escala 6x1, e sofreu sintomas reais: desnutrição, cansaço extremo e parecia estar sofrendo um quadro de depressão, vale a pena sugar até a ultima gota de energia de um trabalhador em prol do lucro?

Pra Quem o Feriado "Vale a Pena" de Verdade?

Aí a gente pensa: tá, pra mim, que tô aqui no corre, a folga vale a pena pra caramba. É o dia de botar a cabeça e a vida em ordem. Mas e pro país?

Vamos ser sinceros: o dinheiro não some no feriado, ele só troca de mão. Talvez a indústria na cidade grande pare, mas a cidade turística do lado, restaurantes, lojas de presentes (como ja falei de todos esses antes), por exemplo em Domingos Martins ou em Guarapari, lota. O dono do quiosque na praia, que rala o mês inteiro, finalmente vê o movimento aumentar. A pousada contrata um funcionário a mais (normalmente temporário). O restaurante vende mais.

O dinheiro sai do grande centro e vai pro turismo. Pra muita gente, o feriado não é o que quebra o negócio, é o que salva o mês. Então, dizer que o feriado "quebra a economia" é olhar só pra uma parte muito pequena da história.

A Verdade que a Gente Evita Falar

No fim das contas, talvez a discussão nem seja sobre ter feriados demais ou de menos.

Talvez a pergunta certa seja: por que a nossa rotina normal de trabalho é tão insuportável que a gente precisa desesperadamente de tantas válvulas de escape?

O feriado virou um remédio pra uma doença que a gente finge não ver: a cultura de exaustão (workaholics, o trabalho acaba tomando conta da mente, o medo de ser demitido, a escala 6x1 desgasta e muito, só pontuando mais uma vez). A gente trabalha mais horas do que deveria, vive conectado o tempo todo e se sente culpado por descansar.

Um país rico não é só o que tem o PIB nas alturas. É o que tem gente saudável, gente que consegue viver, e não só sobreviver. E se pra isso a gente precisar de algumas pausas no ano pra calibrar a alma e lembrar o que é ser humano, então a resposta é clara.
