Inspired by culture.//. My Sunday outfit

I have a thing for wearing a new dress every Sunday, especially on the first Sunday of the month. But what do you do when you are short of new dresses and even short of time to make one? This week has been busy for me but I still managed to pull off a gorgeous Sunday dress. Did I just say gorgeous? Well, sort of. Actually, I made this dress last week for our cultural Sunday in church which was last week Sunday but when I tried it on it looked too plain and not pleasing to me. So this Sunday I was too busy to make another dress so I decided to wear what I made last week but I spiced it up a little bit by adding tiny beads around the neck to give a more sophisticated look.

This style is inspired by my culture, initially made for a cultural Sunday where we were encouraged to wear something that represents our culture to church. Apart from it simplicity that was a bonus, I was intentional about choosing this style. I went for a bubu style not just the regular buba but an “agbada” bubu. Traditionally, Agbada in those days were worn by men but recently, females have begun to rock the style as well, if not even better and more stylish than the men.

So let me call this dress my “30-minute dress”. It is easy to make, even if you are a beginner, lazy, very busy, or unmotivated. It's budget-friendly and quick to make. All you need is 3 yards of a fabric of your choice (I used two fabrics because my primary fabric which is Ankara was not enough so I mixed it with a plain black material); a matching thread; and beads for the neckline (optional but worth it).

THE PROCESS

I cut out the plain fabric and joined it with the Ankara fabric to get my preferred length.

After I fold the fabric into 4 and cut out the neck like without cutting out the shoulders I cut a v-neckline in front only without cutting the shoulders

I sewed bias-binding around the neckline and I hemmed it to make it not make the sewing visible.

I sew the sides creating a 10-inches armhole space

The neck was looking too plain so I decided to do a little beadwork around the neck. I wanted to make 5 rows of beads around the neckline but I called it a quit at 3 because it was taking forever haha

But this is the final look. I never thought this dress was pretty but after many compliments, I'm convinced that the dress is not as bad as I thought. What do you think? Would you make this?

Thank you for visiting my blog and stay creative 🪡❤️

You are just like me. I love the thing about wearing new dresses to church every Sunday but we have no time to be making new outfits and besides we have to be financially wise to not spend all our earnings in fabrics. Cheers to another beautiful dress, thanks for sharing.

Awww this looks so good. You all should give way for the queen of needlework🥰🥰
I like how you added the black fabric at the bottom. It gives it a different style. One that is not so common to see.
