Going bald: A Memorable Bad hair day

Have you ever been mistaken for a boy when you were a girl? Well, let me take you back to one of my most memorable bad hair days. This happened a long time ago about 14 years ago or so, I was in my junior secondary school days, and trust me, it was wild.

I recently got admitted to a public school and as a public school girl, we were meant to cut our hair low. As I was not used to cutting my hair I don't have a stable barber. I just go wherever to cut my hair. That day I decided to go to a barbershop close to my mum's shop. And that's when it all begins.

As a shy and reserved kid, I quietly watched the barber perform his job even though I knew It was not what I wanted. After a while he was done, done barbing a style called “Obama”. This style is done by cutting the hair very close to the skin while leaving a few hairs in the front centre of the hair. Apparently, This style then was one of the trendy haircuts for teenage boys. So he thought I would like it. I can't remember how I felt after the hair cut but I know I didn't like it.

Immediately my mum saw me coming with my new haircut, she took me back to the barber shop and angrily asked the barber why he would cut such a style on her daughter’s head. He sincerely apologized that he had mistaken me for a boy. My mum then told him to even everything out, which meant he had to make my head bald completely. After seeing what my hair or rather my head had become, because I had literally no hair on my head. I Wanted to cry!

The real torment happened on Monday morning. I wasn't sure if I anticipated the gravity of the shame but was sure people would laugh at me. I wish I could skip school till my hair grows a little, but who am I to resist my mum? So I put on our school cap to cover my shame which was an unusual thing for me to do. My friend noticed and opened my cap and laugh at me on the assembly ground along with some other classmates. I was so embarrassed.

I had to live with that stigma till my hair grew back. Even so, it took about a year for them to forget about it. It was really a bad hair experience. I had experienced a lot of bad hair days but this was worse of them all. Public school was really rough and doing something embarrassing or something like going bald was an avenue for teasing.

Oh that must have hurt. Barbers, especially good ones, are a rare commodity and when you find one, keep them. Lol. Sorry you had to experience that.
