Balancing Taxes: Health, Habits, and Public Awareness
Taxes have long been one of the most contentious subjects in public life. Governments of every country put taxes on various things, which are based on the importance and requirement for the betterment of citizens. Sometimes it seems that the implementation of taxes is going to be a burden for the citizen in general, and sometimes it’s tolerable. Sometimes the government exemption or reduces taxes to encourage citizens’ interest in those activities, and sometimes imposes excess taxes to discourage citizens from such activities in general. But excessing in tax never been appreciated by the citizens we have ever seen, even though it is a benefit for the citizens behind this excessive tax. There are a lot of bad habits or practices by people that have no benefit and are even dangerous to their health, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. It is going out of control, and every year dying a lot of people die from cancer of the lungs, throat, failure of the liver, and kidneys, where alcohol and cigarette habits are one of the main reasons behind that disease. And the increasing ratio is frightening. Government and other social associations or NGO’s are trying to raise awareness among people to better understand the bad habits and their critical effects on human health. Unfortunately, the results are not mentionable and also disappointing. The government is also implementing some rules on alcohol consumption for selling and consuming, trying to consolidate the space, limiting the age of consuming alcohol, and many more. For cigarettes government strictly regulates printing on the cigarette packet a prohibiting awareness among smokers, and printing some horrifying and cancer patient pictures on that, which can be frightening for smokers. But nothing is work for the smoker. In some cases, we have seen that the teenager is also addicted to these cigarette habits, which is a big concern. A smoker can’t see the instant bad effects of smoking, it’s like a slow poisoning, day by day, the smoker is going to death, and also smokers are killing other people who are around them, or surrounding them, who are non-smokers.
Alcohol is not available in an open market; to drink alcohol, you have to go to a bar or a club, a hotel, or a restaurant. And a specific age limit for the drinker is quite controlling to discouraging drinking alcohol. But we should not forget about the black market and online delivery services for alcohol. In all, implementing an excess tax will hike the price of alcohol, and with its price hike, it could limit the ability to drink alcohol, and people will drink in smaller quantities, and in some cases, some people may be discouraged from consuming alcohol. It can be a way of controlling the consumption of alcohol, but not enough. The government should implement some new initiatives of awareness and some strict rules and regulations, along with excessive taxes. For cigarettes excess tax does not work too much because of its availability and the retail selling. Cigarettes are sold in the open market and it is they reach of everyone. Raising awareness in society, along with excessive taxes and tight rules and regulations for smoking, could bring good results.
We should not forget about the sugar, excessive sugar can be the cause of various diseases, especially diabetes and obesity. A lot of people are fighting this disease, which is a big concern. But implementing an excess tax on sugar is not a good idea at all. The expensive price of sugar will be another headache for people who are not suffering from diabetes or obesity. Awareness and changing the habits of eating can decrease the consumption of sugar. From my point of view, HEALTHY TAX: an excess tax to expensiveness of alcohol and cigarettes could be a good move, but not for sugar.
