🦉 The Eurasian siskin (Spinus spinus)

  • Spinus spinos (Greek) unidentified bird mentioned Aristotle and other ancient Greek. authors

These yellow birds appear in the forests of my city in mid-spring, that is, around the end of April. However, there are occasional sightings even in winter, in the company of their close relatives, the redpolls. In spring, during the mating season, you can hear their quiet songs, but you won’t be able to get close to the singing bird, it’s too shy.

These birds are known for their agility, which allows them to hang from thin branches to forage for food, such as birch seeds from birch catkins. In addition to seeds, they also eat small insects.
