🦉 The yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)

  • Emberiza embritz (Old German) bunting
  • citrinella citrine (lat.) yellow; citrinella (Italian) yellow bird

These birds arrive early, in late March, when there's still snow on the ground but the sun is already warm and spring-like. In warmer regions of the country, they don't migrate at all and can easily overwinter.
They prefer to nest in open spaces, in clearings near forests.

The main diet consists of cereal grains and grass seeds. During the breeding season, the bird also eats small invertebrates. Chicks are usually fed a mixed diet, with the parents initially feeding them fragmented food in their crops, and later whole food.
