🦉 The common reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus)

  • Emberiza embritz (Old German) bunting
  • schoeniclus skhoinos (Greek) reed; reeds; -cola (lat.) inhabitant; skhoiniklos (Greek) a small coastal bird mentioned by Aristotle

This bird inhabits lowland marshes overgrown with shrubs, reeds, or cattails, the shores of various bodies of water with dense coastal vegetation, and damp meadows. It was there, in a damp meadow, that I encountered the male in the photo.
Their diet is mixed; they eat both animal (small invertebrates, mainly insects) and plant food (vegetative parts, seeds and fruits of plants).

It is interesting that their flight to warmer countries occurs at the end of September, when other birds of this family fly away much earlier.
