🦉 The common rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus)

  • Carpodacus Greek: karpos fruit, daknō to bite
  • erythrinus erythros (Greek, lat.) red

For a herbivorous bird, this species arrives very late, around mid-May, when the trees are already green. It's all about their very strange migration route. First, the birds fly far to the east, and then return back.
Externally, the males look like a sparrow painted pink, and the older the male, the richer the color. For this reason, in the old days they were called "red sparrow". And the females are very similar in appearance to ordinary sparrows, the same brown.

They feed on various seeds, nuts, buds, berries and fruits. Occasionally they eat insects, and nestlings are fed insects.
In the summer they become quiet and you can’t hear them, as if they disappear from the forests, which is why it’s hard for me to say when they start flying back to their wintering grounds.
