🦉 The white wagtail (Motacilla alba)

  • Motacilla lat .: mōto, mōtare move continuously, -cilla tail (cilla like a tail - only in ornithology, erroneous established name)
  • alba (lat.) white

These fragile graceful birds are among the first to return from wintering, in the so-called first wave. At this time, the snow is already actively melting in the city, and outside the river is slowly opening up. And it is not uncommon to see this little bird running across the ice floes on the river.

They also love to inspect the ground scorched by spring fires. Every year I watch them running around the field near the forest and looking for fried insects.
They fly away late, by the standards of insectivorous birds. When almost all birds have already flown away by September or the end of August, the wagtail can still be found until October.
