🦉 Common reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus)

  • Emberiza embritz (Old German) bunting
  • schoeniclus skhoinos (Greek) reed; bulrush; -cola (Latin) inhabitant; skhoiniklos (Greek) small coastal bird mentioned by Aristotle

These birds are very rare in my city. I have met them only 3 times, and it was far away near the river where bushes grow. The bird is very timid and always tries to hide inside a bush and slip out of sight, which is typical for all birds of this family. However, in the neighboring region, on flooded meadows, I managed to get closer to these birds.

They have an inconspicuous, quiet voice, and all I heard from them was a quiet "tsik" sound.
We call them "reed buntings" and they spend their entire lives in shrubby areas.
