🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

These birds are among the first to arrive, when there is still snow in the forest and the weather is constantly changing. Unlike many other species, their return in the spring is impossible to miss, the males sing loudly, occupying territories. They can be found in almost any forest: mixed, light deciduous or even dark coniferous, I have seen them everywhere.

Chaffinchs are known for their songs, of course. It is interesting that their song is not just a set of sounds. If you listen closely, it has a clear structure. The song begins with high notes and ends with a kind of "flourish", a sharp drop in tone. And by the way, this "flourish" has two varieties.
