🦉 The white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos)

• leucotos (Greek): leukos - white, nōton - back

This friend is not as noticeable as the Great Spotted Woodpecker. Its name, of course, gives away its main feature - a white back, which contrasts sharply with its black wings. And if you look at it more closely, you can also see thin, barely noticeable stripes on the sides of the body.

This species loves old forests with an abundance of rotten birches and aspens. Unlike its spotted relative, it does not knock on healthy trunks, but methodically pecks rotten wood, looking for larvae. Because of this specialization, encounters with it are less frequent, because special conditions are needed.
