🦉 The Eurasian golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus)

  • Oriolus oryolus (lat.) oriole [Old French. oryol oriole, aureolus gold]

Orioles arrive late, when the foliage is already thick, around mid-May. Their flute-like whistle can be heard from afar, but the bird itself is rarely seen, hiding in the crowns of tall trees. If you come too close, the oriole will make an alarming cry, like a cat meowing sharply.

These birds feed on various insects, such as dragonflies, caterpillars, including hairy caterpillars, which no one except them and cuckoos eat. They also eat berries, but I will not be able to observe this, since the orioles fly away very early, in August they are no longer there.
