🦉 The Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus)

  • Passer (lat.) sparrow
  • montanus lat .: mōns, montis - mountain, mountain range, montanus - mountain

This species of wild sparrows can easily be confused with the house sparrow, but it has clear differences: a brown cap on the head and black spots on the cheeks, and overall more contrasting plumage. They are less dependent on humans and are more often found outside the city, in rural areas on the edges, in gardens or near fields.

And with the arrival of cold weather, they move more to their city companions and can even be seen in a common sparrow flock and near feeders. They nest in hollows, birdhouses or holes, sometimes occupy empty nests of swallows or live under the roofs of houses in summer cottages or villages. They feed on seeds, but in the summer they catch insects, especially for nestlings.
