🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

When in early spring, often still on the snow, a ringing, rolling song with a characteristic "flourish" ending is heard - know: the finches have returned. These elegant birds, the males of which sport a pinkish-red chest, a gray cap and white "epaulettes" on their wings, are rightfully considered to be one of the most beautiful and most musical of our feathered neighbors.

And I mentioned the males for a reason, because they are the first to arrive and look for suitable territories for them. And when they occupy them, they begin to sing, defending and signifying it.
The females are not brightly colored and generally resemble sparrows in appearance. They arrive about a week later.
