🦉 The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)

  • Ficedula fi cedulinus (medieval lat.): “A small bird that feeds on figs and turns into a black-headed warbler in winter ”(from: Jobling, 2010)
  • hypoleuca hypoleucos Greek: hypo below, a little, leukos white, hypoleukos whitish

These birds arrive at the end of April, when there may still be cold weather and a minimum of insects. But this does not sadden them at all, because they are able to feed on frost-resistant stink bugs, which other birds do not eat.

By the way, in recent years I have noticed that they have begun to settle more often in city courtyards. Yes, their number is very small, not like great tits or warblers, but I still occasionally hear their songs when I walk around the city.
