🦉 The Eurasian bullfinch, common bullfinch or bullfinch (Pyrrhula pyrrhula)

  • Pyrrhula (Greek): pyrrhos - red

If in winter you come across a group of birds that look like ripe cherries in the snow, that's them, the bullfinches. The males are real dandies with a crimson chest and a black cap, and the females are more modest, like a muted watercolor: gray-pink, with the same elegant "cap". These birds don't just eat berries, they do it with a special chic: they carefully scrape the pulp off the seeds, like gourmets cutting up a fruit dessert. Unlike waxwings or thrushes, which swallow everything in sight.

Their voices sound modest and not loud. The calls are a quiet sad whistle, and the song is very quiet and resembles the creaking of iron or doors. And here's what's strange, these birds do not react at all if you turn on their voices on your phone.
