🦉 The common tern (Sterna hirundo)

  • Sterna stearn, starn (Old English) tern
  • hirundo (Latin) swallow

These graceful birds with sharp shapes live on a large river flowing along my city and not only. In mid-May I walk along the river line to admire them. They are just in mating season at this time, and you can see how the male catches fish for the female who is flying nearby.

The main diet of these birds is small fish, but they can also eat mollusks and insects. By the way, they eat right in the air.
They have an interesting way of hunting. The bird patrols the river and when it sees a fish it hovers in the air like a helicopter, takes aim, and then dives for the catch.

Крачка очень похожа на чайку, но к нам не прилетали чайки уже 2 года. Даже не знаю почему. Обычно жили на реке 2-3 недели, а некоторые оставались до 2 месяцев.
