Birdwatching - 2033 🐦

🦉 The European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca)

  • Ficedula fi cedulinus (medieval lat.): “A small bird that feeds on figs and turns into a black-headed warbler in winter ”(from: Jobling, 2010)
  • hypoleuca hypoleucos Greek: hypo below, a little, leukos white, hypoleukos whitish

These birds arrive in the second wave of migratory birds, that is, when there is practically no snow in the forest, but the weather is still quite cool. As a rule, this is around the end of April. One weather in my region is unpredictable, and sometimes completely crazy. For example, in mid-April it can be +20C for a couple of days, and in early May it can snow, or even a blizzard,

I say this because these birds have adapted well to this weather. Yes, they are insectivorous, but in such weather not all insects have appeared in the forests. And when it is really cold, only those insects remain that almost no one except this bird eats. Namely, stink bugs(Heteroptera).
