TEMPTATION IN A SUITCASE: A TEST OF CHARACTER ON A MINIMUM WAGE JOURNEY

Integrity is one of the most important values anyone can carry through life. It goes beyond just telling the truth. It’s about doing what is right, even when no one is watching. Integrity shows in how we treat others, how we handle responsibilities, and how we respond to tough situations. In every area of life whether relationships, business, leadership, or everyday choices. Integrity builds trust, peace of mind, and lasting respect and that’s why when life presents a moment like finding a large sum of money that doesn’t belong to you, your integrity decides whether you rise or fall. It’s in moments like this that a person’s true character is revealed.

Well, if I ever found $500,000 and realized it wasn’t mine, my first reaction would naturally be shock and confusion. I’ll surely first think of what the money will do for me and how it will solve all of my problems. I might think about solving my financial problems, supporting my family, supporting my woman by investing in her, or starting a new life. But after that rush of emotion fades, I would need to take a step back and think clearly about the demerits of keeping the money with me when the owner has publicly come out to announce the news of the loss. Integrity means not letting pressure or temptation push me into making a wrong decision.

As a person who lives from hand to mouth, my heart will beat fast, and my mind will start racing with thoughts of what that money could do for me but deep down, I would know that this moment is not just about money but a test of character.

Some people might argue that the money belongs to a rich or a corrupt politician, and I should keep it because he doesn’t deserve it, but it is not really fair as a human. Two wrongs will not make a right and Integrity means standing for your own values, not copying someone else’s wrong behavior. I wouldn’t want to become what I dislike in others.

We’ve seen stories of ordinary people who returned lost valuables and got unexpected blessings. I remember the story of a private driver in Lagos state who carried the son of a private businessman who was also a mini business person, forgot a multimillionaire original document that would have changed the driver’s story if he had kept it to himself but he decided not to do so and instead, called the businessman son’s number though he never knew that his client was a businessman’s son and he got massively rewarded thereafter that changed his career and that of his families and he was given a business that will erase poverty in his family and the family thereafter. That’s the kind of impact that integrity can make as it builds a legacy that money can’t buy.

Keeping the money might bring short-term relief. Still, I believe it would also bring long-term trouble because I might constantly have the fear of getting caught, also to live with guilt, and never truly enjoy the money as peace of mind is a powerful thing, and knowing you did the right thing also brings a kind of freedom no amount of money can give.

In the end, I would choose to return the money not because life is easy or because I don’t need it, but because I know what I stand for. Integrity is not just a word; it’s a way of life and when the moment passes, I want to look back and be proud of the choice I made. That’s the kind of person I want to be.
