Natural Disasters: Flood

Natural disasters are phenomena that are beyond explanation. They are catastrophic events that occur due to natural forces and result in significant damage to human lives, properties, and environments. Many of these natural disasters, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and typhoons, don't give warnings before occurring. Still, thanks to meteorologists, geologists, and other climatic scientists, they do help in foretelling if there will be an occurrence or not to protect lives and properties, also to get people prepared for such a day, and find safety measures. But sometimes, it's unfortunate that these events cannot be stopped; natural disasters would always find their way out, and that's because no one can stop nature.

Causes of flood

In Africa, especially in West Africa and in Nigeria, to be precise, all these natural disasters are not common except for floods which are one of the frequent and devastating events affecting many lives each year. In urban areas in Nigeria, floods are common due to irresponsible refuse dumping in the drainage system which blocks the flow of water when rain falls. The rural areas are a bit less flooded because of their landscaping, unlike urban areas where there is no landscaping or house planning. Flooding occurs when water overflows onto normally dry land. This is sometimes caused by heavy rainfall and overflow of rivers or dams and human activities aren't helping either.

Effects of flood

The aftermath of a flood is always devastating. This is what I've witnessed more often over time. Victims of floods find it difficult to get their lives back on track after being affected. Floods destroy homes, farmlands, and sometimes entire communities. There is no adequate care and preparation for flood victims in most developing countries. No disaster management or emergency services are available. The effects of a flood can lead to massive loss of lives if there isn't prompt help when needed. Aside from the physical damages that can be seen, a flood can also cause waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid due to contaminated water sources. In the economic aspect, floods disrupt businesses and agriculture, leading to a loss of livelihood. Survivors are always left with the trauma of what happened to them especially when there is no help.

Preventive measures

Recently, a flood caused a bridge in Kogi State, Lokoja to be destroyed. The bridge was wrecked and many lost their lives in that incident. If there had been preventive and responsive measures in place for a disaster such as this, many lives would not have been lost. The government should invest in proper urban planning and improve drainage systems. Reforestation should be encouraged too, and early warning should be issued to avoid and prepare for this disaster. Citizens should also play their parts by avoiding the blockage of drainage. Additionally, disaster education should be given to all citizens and emergency preparedness should be in place to save lives and minimise damage during floods.
