Mental health matters

Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being that encompasses an individual's emotional, psychological, and social functioning. Maintaining sound mental health involves a multifaceted approach which includes self-care, professional support, and societal understanding and acceptance. One of the keys that contributes to mental health, among many others, is fostering a positive relationship. As humans, we tend to react to every one of our feelings, such as anxiety, depression, and trauma. These three are common and have significant impacts on an individual's life, and at some point, if not well managed, can affect healthy living.

In the year 2022, I was in a relationship that nearly seized or kidnapped my mental health. It wasn't a toxic relationship in the sense of physical abuse, but then I guess emotional bullying is much more painful than physical itself. Many go into a relationship to find companionship and friendship in a person who is ready to go to any length to make them happy, but then what happens when it's not as you have imagined or expected? For me, peace of mind is what matters most. Finding that one person with whom you can be so free and be happy even when apart.

The relationship was one of the best at the start, but then no one knew what was in stock until different stories started popping up, and it looked so unending. It's from one ill story to another one, and to cap it all, the so-called ex-girlfriend was still very much in the picture. Show up like a ghost at every given opportunity, claiming some sort of absurd rights, but then the wrong person to be advised is a lady in love. It's just so crazy how I ignored some obvious red flags all in the name of love. I went on and on acting like nothing was wrong and pulling several strings to make the relationship work out just the way I wanted it but then I had my parents to thank for the eye opener that made me see and realize it's not a relationship but a slavery. This was a relationship I was investing in and sacrificing for while losing my mental health, thinking it was a matter of time before everything would be corrected, and just the way I wanted it.

Thanks to my parent's love, I was able to speak with them and they were my savior at that time. It was a relationship that was not up to a year, and I can count multiple losses from my end, be it emotional or financial. The relationship lasted for eleven months, and I just needed my peace back and healthy mental health because, before that time, I was on the verge of losing my mind over baseless arguments, misunderstandings, irrelevant excuses, and unnecessary fights. I just had to let go for the sake of my well-being, which I did, and afterward, I felt a heavy burden off my shoulders. I was able to focus more on myself and grow at the pace at which I've always wanted. Seeing life from another point of view, giving myself the love I deserve, and also prioritizing my happiness over any others.

Glad your parents came into the picture and I guess that’s the best they can give you as a parent. You also got your eyes opened so quick and that I could say is a part of what made you find inner peace again. I so much hate toxic relationships

I love the fact that you are open to discuss many things including your relationship with your parents. They have the experience and they can advise you better on the way to follow in life. It's gratifying that you listened to them too. Mental health is not worth sacrificing for anything else.
