Koye's Victory
Koye sat quietly under the mango tree in front of his father's rented apartment one afternoon in deep thought. His mother had left him with his father since he was one year old. His father had been his support system since then because he never knew his mother. Kobe had a dream of becoming a footballer since he was five years old, and his father encouraged him by buying him a jersey and boots, also encouraging him to go to training while he studied.
Koye is now eighteen years old. He finished secondary school two years earlier. Still, he hadn't gotten admission into a higher institution because he didn't have enough marks in mathematics to secure admission.
"Adekoye, take it easy on yourself, I've seen the way you've been reading nonstop these days. You're straining your eyes than necessary, rest, my son, and continue tomorrow", his father said one midnight when he woke up to ease himself and saw Koye studying hard for another examination.
"Baami(my father)", as Koye fondly calls his father. "You've been wasting money on me on this particular exam for two years, I don't want to waste your money again this year. I know how difficult it is to get money at this present time", Koye responded humbly.
"Adekoye omo mi(my son) am I complaining? Don't overburden yourself with all these things. It is my responsibility to provide for you, and I will, but I won't watch you overstress yourself. Things will work out fine at the right time", his father patiently explained to him.
"I've heard your father, I will go to bed now and continue tomorrow", Koye said and went to bed.
The next morning, Koye woke up early, did the few house chores, prepared breakfast for himself and his father then went to where he was working as an attendant before going to the field in the evening to train. This had been his daily routine since he graduated from secondary school. He had to work to support his father in preparation for his higher education bills. He was preparing for another external examination that would determine if he would gain admission that year, and he had been preparing so well for it, as he is determined to further his education and make his father proud, even if he'll still be a footballer.
After the result of the examination was released, luck shone on Koye, and he got admission into a university in his town, which made him closer to his father and still able to work and go for training. In the second year, almost all his friends who trained together have been accepted by one club or the other, both local and international.
"Come on, Koye, your time will come, and I'm sure it will be better", Coach Felix told him one evening after training. Koye sat on the corner of the pitch, brooding and sighing heavily, when his coach noticed his mood.
"Am I doing anything wrong? Femi, Solar, Taribo, and Niyi, they've all left me, among those we train together, I'm the only one left", Koye explained to Coach Felix.
"Don't sweat my CR7, you're going to a better place, relax, don't let that weigh you down", Coach Felix said with a smile, tapping Koye on the shoulder.
"No problem, Coach, thanks, see you tomorrow, sir", Koye said and left.
Koye continued training like never before and studying hard to pass his school examination. In his 400-level, which is the final year in the higher institution, he was preparing for his final examination, so he hadn't been going for training to prepare well for the examination.
"Koye where are you?, I have some good news for you my boy", Coach Felix called Koye one afternoon when he was in school.
"I'm all ears Coach", Koye replied.
"Come by the field later, I just called to inform you", Coach Felix said.
After Koye left school, he went to work and returned to the field later in the evening to see Coach Felix.
"Adekoye, my boy, congratulations, my boy", Coach Felix said with a broad smile.
"Coach, I did not understand, congratulations for what?" Koye asked, surprised.
"Nigeria's national team has invited you, here is the letter. Your videos that we've been posting finally made way", Coach Felix said hugging Koye.
Koye couldn't believe his ears, he hurriedly opened the letter and it was right before his eyes. He ran home to his father and showed him the letter. That day, Koye's joy knew no bounds, and that was the beginning of a changed story for him.
"Indeed, patience pays; this is a dream come true", Koye said with a broad smile.
