Factors affecting decision making and discipline

Among the factors that affect decision-making and threaten or destroy discipline is peer pressure. I call this "I wanna be attitude"; this is common among teenagers and young adults, and it is becoming rampant in our society today. Everyone wants to live a luxurious life without working hard to enjoy such wealth. Some go as far as involving in illegal businesses just to make money not thinking of the repercussions.

Recently, a twenty-seven-year-old man was caught as a result of murdering his girlfriend, selling her body parts for money. Several stories related to this have been shared all over social media to caution teenagers and young adults to desist from habits that could ruin their future due to peer pressure. Many of these young adults want to do things their age mates, that is, friends or colleagues, are doing, and live their kind of lives without thorough investigation on how they got to where they are. And at the end, it always landed them in a big mess leaving them to suffer the consequences alone. Their role model who they wanted to be like would be outside enjoying the best of life while the one who wanted to be like the role model would be in prison or suffer an unfortunate ending.

Another factor that looks more like peer pressure is family pressure. We have some families today that put so much pressure and responsibilities on their young adults and teenagers, working against the discipline instilled in them since childhood. As much as some try to maintain their discipline and stay focused to not dent their images and that of their families, family pressure serves as a driving force for them to go into illegal means of survival. Children have the right age at which they would have matured physically, emotionally, and psychologically to handle family responsibilities but some are burdened with various responsibilities right from a tender age and this threatens discipline because to stand up to all the responsibilities, such individuals would have no other options than to do things they might not be acceptable.

Comparison is another factor that disrupts decision-making and renders discipline useless sometimes. I love the saying that "only a fool plays the game of comparison". Some individuals believe they must be at the same pace in life as their agemates or colleagues. Many go into marriage because their mates are married without taking enough time to understand their partners and see if the relationship would be productive. Many compare their jobs with others,, whereas they have different jobs, yet they want to live as others.

Decision-making is an individual choice although sometimes some forces trigger it both positively and negatively. The listed points can render discipline useless, and fighting back to be on the right track can be so impossible, leaving behind nothing but regrets. Determination is one good way to combat pressure, staying focused and solidly behind one's decision is a great antidote for pressure.
