From fear to victory

Failure can be defined in many contexts, it is not only in academics. Failure can be in a career, relationship, or even personal growth. Failing to leave a spot after several attempts and repeating the same mistakes over and over again can be related to failure in personal growth. I believe quite a large number of people have this fear of failing which is the fear of not succeeding in life. The reason why most of us are working hard the way we are is because we want to be somebody in life and not just anybody. Personally, I fear failure; I hate it when I fail in any area, but what has kept me going is I don't give up no matter the times I fail.

Some things can trigger the fear of not succeeding and I can say this because I've experienced it. Someone who is being talked down on will live every day of his or her life in fear because he or she wouldn't want to fail to avoid people's castigation. Self-doubt is also a fear enhancer; doubting one's ability to achieve great things in life will lead to fear of succeeding, likewise anxiety and procrastination. I was once in a position where all I ever wanted to do was win, and that was at all cost. Earlier in the journey of my life, I failed at some point in my academics, a failure that took me five years to rectify. In the process of struggling to find my path, a lot of criticism came along the way, even from people I least expected. People who were supposed to have my back were the ones talking down on me.

I was on the verge of giving up when a breakthrough came for me. Sometimes what causes this fear of failure is not the failure itself but societal pressure, comparison, family expectations, and social media. This is for people who rely on and believe everything they see on social media. Accumulating unnecessary fear into one's life is possible if one wants to live according to the level at which those celebrities on social media are living. I believe mistakes are part of what enhances our growth in any area of life. Perfectionism sometimes isn't necessary, you just have to make that mistake to learn from it and forge ahead. The moment you want everything to be perfect, the fear of failing sets in, and once fear sets in, the mistakes you are avoiding will become the order of the day.

I remember the year 2020 when I was learning how to drive, my dad was my coach and it wasn't an easy one. He shouted at me for every mistake, and at some point I got tired. To avoid his shouting, I'm always too conscious when I'm learning, trying not to make mistakes but the more careful I am, the more mistakes I make. It was then I realized being over-careful or conscious of mistakes only brings about making more mistakes.

Fear of not succeeding can also be linked to past failures and it's lingering effects. Some tend not to forget their past mistakes that led to failure. Holding on to such memories will only create more fear. Fighting through my failure of five years, I make sure I forget and let go of every mistake I made then and focus on the present and the new future I am building for myself. I don't listen to hearsay and don't listen to words of discouragement. I became a hero of my story; I rewrote it, reading all my mistakes and learning from them, which contributed to my new growth. I set a new goal, I realized self-compassion, and through resilience, I was able to find my path again. Today, I no longer have this fear of failing; I am now so confident that even if or when I fail, I will find my path again and forge ahead till I reach the success peak, which is my aim. I almost lost to fear but I'm glad I didn't. My story from failure to success is now something I can share over and over again, and that's because I never gave in to failure.
