Weekend run 23km! Breaking in new shoes

Hi all! One of the new running pairs I ordered earlier this week arrived! After running >1300km on the Saucony Omni 22 - I reordered the same model. Comparing the foam between the old and newer pair made me realize I should had replaced them a little earlier.

Top shoe is the new one, the bottom one is the old one. While the old shoe looks pretty decent the damage on the foam is telling.

Today I took my new shoes for a spin! I found the best way to break in new shoes is to vary in pace within a session. That way you can check if you need to make lacing adjustments (for example to lock the heel or to give the toes a little more space).

For me, an early morning run is something I can look forward to for a few days! This Sunday I started at 07:15 with a fast 5km where I kept increasing the pace.

While I didn’t attempt my 5km goal today (sub 20m | current best 20:16) runs like these show I am getting close. After a few weeks of interval I will do an attempt to break my time! The new shoes felt great - no issues at all (which honestly surprised me a bit as I used to lock the heel with the older pair).

After the 5km I gave myself 2 min to catch a breath to reset my higher heartrate. Sunday is my long distance slot, so I got back to the road and went for another 17.5 km. While starting as in zone 2 (lower heartbeat) at 7km in. I decided to just make it a fun run and just run at a pace that felt good.

One thing that I really love about blogging about running, is that it also challenges you to find a different routes rather than just redoing the same laps over and over again! Well today I discovered a very small path that looked interesting!

The path was basicly a straight line close to the water and next to the green. While I could see the skyline of Rotterdam I had trouble orientating so I was surpriced to find myself next to the highway near Delft all of a sudden. From there I picked up another green route between farmers lands and protected nature zones.

My nutrition strategy was simple, below 25km distance I try to run sober (no breakfast nor gels during the run), beyond 25km some fuel is preferable!

Overall, great way to spend the sunday early morning! The shoes aced the test, no hot spots on the feet at all while I did really push the pace earlier today!

Happy running!
