Collecting stamps of Old Europe: September acquisitions

I'm continuing to share my new vintage acquisitions with you. After the August stamp flood, I put my shopping activity on hold for a while... partly for financial reasons, but mostly due to overeating. It's better to fast a bit; after that, you start to appreciate food more ;)
So, in September, I received just one letter containing two small lots of Austrian Empire stamps. Totally its just 12 stamps - but so much can be told about them!

The 1st lot was just one stamp, so called "Mercury" newspaper stamp from 1880, denomination of 1/2 kreuzer. I already had such a stamp, but this edition looked better and had more attractive perforation, so I ruthlessly invested $0.50 into the auction and - happily! - there were no other bidders so I got it for the low starting price; not bad for such vintage stuff. Although, strictly speaking, I didn't get anything new and it didn't improve my collection much.

In the photo above, you see the first of three pages in my album dedicated to Austrian "newspaper stamps." The top row contains issues from 1867 to 1899, and below that is the 1908 issue. I didnt manage yet to acquire the earliest newspaper stamps (the so-called "Blue Mercury") - they cost exorbitant amounts of money, simply does not to my level. I participated in an auction once, bidding for one such a stamp - the auction started at a symbolic 0.1 cents, but as my financial resources are very limited, I quickly fell behind the other bidders.

A close-up view on these Mercuries. Sympatico, isnt it?

I found fascinating, how much different renditions of a same subject is out there... in terms of design. In the 1867 issues, you'll certainly notice similarities with the first English postage stamps and especially the first French stamps, which depicted the fertility goddess Demeter. The design evolved, and over the years, the appearance of the Mercury newspaper stamps certainly changed. It's a pure pleasure to examine this graphic design evolution over the course of three or four decades!

So... the second lot I got from same dealer contained as much as 11 stamps - most of which already were present in my collection before that.

It is 11 'porto' stamps the 1916 release series. All of them costed me 100 rubles, plus registered mail delivery doubled the price - meaning that I paid $2 for it.) However, I consider this rather a bargain: the stamps of a beautiful cornflower blue color have high denominations of 1, 5, and 10 Kreuzer and seem to be a bit more rare.

I've never seen any clean, unused copies, and the price level for cancelled ones is simply shameless. Sometimes a single stamp is valued for 1-2 dollars (in comparison to red ones which are 0,05 cents and very very well-circulated). For me such a wild range of prices means there exist no objective market value, just someone's fantasies and a greedy thirst to milk more money off me. :)))

Just checked eBay to educate myself about the price level - on the right you see a screencap of the first lot I stumbled upon. Mda... I'm truly feel shocked by the price tag, actually. These are used cancelled stamps, and the price includes international shipping, but still ... it is 1916, not 1849!!!

What ze hell. I'm simply out of inks.

The red series was already in my collection earlier, in fact I received these stamps as a bonus and simply improved the sheets of my album a little with two clean stamps without cancellation (denominations of 15 and 25 hellers).

The word "porto" conceals an interesting postal technology known as "additional postage" stamps. The sender pays for their item with stamps, and the final postal fee is determined by the post office during delivery. Postal workers indicated the additional amount to be paid by the recipient by franking the envelope with the appropriate number of porto stamps. (The secret to its use appears to be lost today...) I can't say I've collected all the Austrian port stamps; (for now) I've completely ignored the port stamps of the Austrian Republic, which were issued after the collapse of the empire, from 1918 onward. But I have, at least, collected the main series and varieties of imperial port stamps.

(The full story could make a separate blog, but it would require from me a tremendous amount of time; three and a half people would come in to educate themselves about this intresting stuff, and the whales or curators who automatically support any pinmapple / travel post, as long as it has 5+ pictures and a snappy title, like "How I traveled to some godforsaken place nobody is intrested in and here are its Google coordinates" - they will never ever check my post, not speaking of supporting this intresting original material. Thus I'd prefer better not to waste my time on it. Just enjoy the visuals and collecting process.

To be completely happy (is it possible at all, even theoretically?..) I'm probably missing these two 1911 stamps. They're the highest-denomination stamps, and apparently because of this, fewer of them were issued, making them less common and much more expensive. I've seen several offers on auction site meshok.net — four dealers suggest them to be precise — but all the lots I see are canceled copies, with an ugly, dirty seal covering the stamp field, thus I consider the price tags to be exorbitant.

Ebay has it too - found a lot of two uncancelled stamps that look perfect. But DAMN, look at the price tag.... Ok, all in all -- I'll be waiting for more realistic offers and hold off purchasing of this series for now.

* * * RU version * * *

Stamp collecting of this classic period, it is quite interesting. But the "good pieces" are very rare and expensive. Stamp collecting is not very popular in the Hive community, and now days few people are interesting in this hobby.

Nice to see your new acquisitions.

Hehe... yeah... why should those who are intrested in highly ephemeral crypto thingies, should keep breath for a dusty old papers like this?.. but I am, and do it for the pure pleasure of mine. Still there are a few folks here at Hive who share this passion now (or had this hobby in their early days). It is a good one, as it boosts one's learning curve in many ways.

Thanks for a stop, and have a great weekend my friend.

I collected stamps seriously for more than 20 years and I built a good collection. However I stopped "investing" more money into the collection at the beginning of this century. I admit, collecting stamps (issued before the 70s) it is a fascinating hobby.

Those are nice stamps. I love how they used to make them, so much more a work of art than today. How interesting to see Mercury on those, mostly the Mercury I'm used to comes from the Mercury dime here in the US. The porto stamps are really pretty, what nice artwork and from 1916, over a century old. Very cool!

Yes, love them too. Mercurius is the symbol of commerce, the patron god of business (and lets forget not his speedy winged sandals...) so it's no wonder he was used by everyone and everywhere. over-use, over-replication.
happy to have you as one of my readers that appreciate the blog, the stuff. let me treat you with !BEER and !PIZZA. we need any consolation we can get, with the current sink of the crypto-markets, !LOLZ

I am far more a coin collector than stamps, though I have a few that match some coins my country of Canada. Coin and stamp collecting have declined in pure numbers here. My local coin club is affiliated with the local stamp club so i often see my club participate with Stamp hobbyists in Community shows. Stamps are a fascinating insight to history and having them as a part of the big show I have developed an appreciation to Stamp collecting.

Coin and stamp collecting have declined in pure numbers here.

Cant give opinion how it is going on here (cause have no communications with new generations, cant state it firmly). But i've heard in the past statements that 'Coin counterfeiting (electroplating technology etc) have reached such unattainable heights that it has become completely impossible to collect coins, no sense at all - unless, of course, you willing to collect copies.' Paper and old types of printing still prove to be more difficult to reproduce

Man, that price tag for the stamp is so amazing. I mean who would buy that at that price.
but hey there maybe one of you who loves stamps colelcting so much that has tons of money, so they can buy those for their hobby.

I still can't believe the disparity that we have, I mean on the 1800 you guys already had stamps like that over there, and I think we are here still under feudal rulers who believe more of superstition, and most of the people are illiterate.
