10,000 pigeon invaders on a wire - monochrome photos for SMAP #239

Today was a long day filled with a lot of pleasurable activity, including office duties, obtaining some new stamps, a precious meeting with my old friends, drinking wine, tea, coffee and a lot of chatting. And in the morning some photography also fit in! So, this post goes for 'Show me a photo (of a bird)' contest, round #239. (Week had no specific thematic suggested).

A notice to the public. The city has received some nice, sunny weather — but according to the forecast, it's only for two days—so I took advantage of the offer and brought my camera with me today. Last week, near the metro station where my office is located, I was drawn to a (trivial) sight: a huge congregation of pigeons perched on the wires. Passing by this spot every day, I occasionally see this scene, but usually the pigeons are grazing on the lawn or asphalt... Why they sometimes gather together on the wires is truly a mystery to me! I can only assume they need to hold a meeting from time to time... (A similar situation sometimes happens in my office—top management doesn't want to work, and then we "meet"... a waste of time and pointless conversations with zero efficiency. But forgive me, I digress.)

So, today, the following coincided: a) nice sunny weather, b) a camera with a telephoto lens, c) the pigeons sitting at the correct spot. I was delighted with my foresight... and took several captures. Nothing brilliant or extra special, but it's exactly what I hoped to get and what I wanted to get. So, I could not but share the whole photo-set with you.

A Headless HorseMan! huh - I wanted to say: a headless pigeon, of course.

I am well-awared of a poop option thus I was accurate and did not come too close. Camera did not get in touch with the results of pigeons digesting :D
thank you for bewaring me, and let me share with you Hive !PIZZA :D

In my mind the answer is two-fold. They line up to watch from a high spot if anyone will come out to feed them, and at the same time they can preen themselves. If anyone comes to spread a handful of bread crumbs below, the whole flock will rush down to eat.

The hypothesis is fine, but it leaves a question: why aren't they sitting on the wire all the time? ofc maybe it's a case of random distribution...

Oh my! Fantastic photos, all lovely, but I especially loved the close-ups of the chicks perched on the wires and in black and white!... Applause!

Greetings @qwerrie ,

What lovely photography you have presented here.....so very apt for the moment...at least in the Northern Hemisphere anyway. Beautiful, colourful, dynamic images of Autumn.....thank you!

Kind Regards, Bleujay

Meoww!! 🐈 yes, it is fresh stuff, not something well-mufmmified from my waste vaults. Sadly, here where I live we move at sufficient speed to rainy autumn skies, freeze, 'dog weather' and tiny light day - all it is unbearable for me, and impulses to go out in search of a beauty to capture... -> fall below zero. Probably, soon I will entertain myself with movies and mulled wine. But the Southern Hemisphere and Hive travel blogs help to keep the spirit... well, a bit.

Photos are brilliant, the pigeons are great models.
I don't know either why birds and pigeons in particular like to perch on wires, but it always a good spot.
