My visit to St.Petersburg Book Salon, May 2025 - Day 2. Mission completed under heavy rain! +26 photos

Every year in May, St. Petersburg hosts a massive book fair which lasts for four days, and I always try to find an opportunity to visit it. This year, the stars in the sky arranged in such a way that exactly on the date I planned my visit, the heavens opened up to flood the city with streams of water. But I am a stubborn person, and decided not to change my plans. ☂️

Who said 'use an umbrella' ?? I am not an umbrella kind of a person - it is too much excessive weight, especially when you bear a weighty backpack with extra lenses. Instead, I found a positive side to the trouble: I can take pictures of the city dwellers as they get wet and hurry to escape the rain :)

I sighed and prepared to get wet. But also, I found a positive side in the trouble: I can take pictures of the townspeople as they get wet and hurry to escape the rain and show their full spectre of emotions :) Rain changes the usual environment and creates new opportunities that benefit to a photographer who keeps an eye on things and not afraid of a little rain.

Photographers under rain are like fish in a water, right?.. not at all, but still, there were plenty of them around!

But on another side - I am very afraid of getting my camera and lenses wet... that's why I don't go out to take pictures in the rain on purpose, and I do it quite rarely. But when fate, destiny deals me such cards - then I don't resist... but take advantage of the opportunity.

The Nevsky Prospect tube station is the closest point to the Palace Square, where the festival is run. Admiralteiskaya tube station is another easy option to go, but I started my walk from The Nevsky Prospect. All those crowds you see in the photos below, is the Nevsky Prospect - the city's central avenue.

With a few stops for taking photos, I approached to the Palace square -- with Alexandre column, ensemble of Hermitage state museum, and all other intresting places worth seeing.

Fake aristocrats dressed in 17th century costumes work in all weathers - and of course they were there, offering passers-by to take pictures together for insanely large sums of money. However, theres always a person who want to pay for that...

The Palace square is huge and pretty often serves as a comfortable hosting spot for various sorts of such activity.

The green building in the background, if you didn't know, is the famous State Hermitage Museum. This is just one of its buildings - the museum is actually located in several locations, and it is impossible to visit all the branches even in one week.

The main scene of the festival (located outdoors) when I arrived, housed performance of some trivial jazz-band. Not too much spectators, yeah - partly due to the band qualities, partly to the pouring rain. Anyway - those who arrived to the festival with intention to explore the books - they proceeded to the books pavilions, without stopping for these free (and a bit pointless) extra amusements.

Some girls were dancing to it - paying no attention to the rain at all. Thats up to me! the way it should be... true citizens of our city! ☂️

Later in the evening, the scene served as an outdoors cinema theatre. Old black and white soviet movie 'Cinderella' was shown. (Each evening of the festival it was a different movie).

One of the festival's pavilions - book presentations and other talks were held here.

Free baloons giveaway by the biggest book store chain reseller. Every baloon had an inprint 'Seems the right time to go to the bookstore' with 'Bukvoed' brand logo. Those baloons made happy a lot of kids during the festival, no doubts.

A swing for those who would love to have a rest with a book, or cup of coffee, or without it.

A coffee kiosk was pretty popular spot, always crowdy.

Of all four pavilions, I visited only one -- with an exposition focusing on children's literature. I spent just one hour examining books before the Day 2 of exhibition was closed - but found some marvelous editions that I'd really love to buy, read, and keep at my shelves. Sadly, my space is limited to the point where I let myself to obtain only 2-3 books per year, the most exceptional and attractive, most irresistable cases 🥰 This time I almost escaped without spending money on books -- but after harsh consideration, finally I obtained this one.

'The Book of Boy' by Catherine Gilbert Murdock. Annotation stated it was the best book in the kidz literature genre back in 2018, and received a Newbery Honor Award. I keep breathing this book may boost my kid's intrest in reading... but the chances arn't that high, heh.

I will throw in a piece of review on the other books that attracted my eyes, but its better to head them to the Hive Book Club. Let me round up my post here. See you next time!

Каждый год в мае в Санкт-Петербурге проводится книжный салон (ярмарка), оно продолжается четыре дня, и я всегда стараюсь найти возможность его посетить. В этом году звезды на небе распорядились таким образом, что именно в тот вечер, когда я запланировал свой визит на книжную ярмарку - небеса разверзлись чтобы затопить город потоками воды. Но я упрямый человек, и решил что не буду менять своих планов.

Я вздохнул, и приготовился мокнуть. Но вместо этого, я нашел в неприятности и позитивную сторону: можно пофотографировать горожан, как они мокнут и спешат убежать от дождя :) Дождь меняет окружающую среду, реальность, и создает много новых возможностей которые являются благом для фотографа который зорко смотрит вокруг и не боится промокнуть. Но промочить камеру и объективы я как раз очень боюсь... поэтому специально не хожу фотографировать под дождем, и делаю это довольно редко. Но когда судьба, проведение сдает мне такие карты - тут уже я не сопротивляюсь... а пользуюсь возможностью.

Станция метро «Невский проспект» — ближайшая точка к Дворцовой площади, где проходит фестиваль. Станция метро «Адмиралтейская» — еще один удобный вариант, но я начал свою прогулку с Невского проспекта. Все эти толпы, которые вы видите на фотографиях ниже, — это Невский проспект — центральный проспект города.

Сделав несколько остановок для фотографирования, я подошел к Дворцовой площади — с Александровской колонной, ансамблем Государственного музея Эрмитаж и всеми другими интересными местами, которые стоит посмотреть.

Фальшивые аристократы, одетые в костюмы 17 века, работают в любую погоду - и разумеется они были на месте, предлагая прохожим сфотографироваться вместе за невменяемо большие суммы денег. Впрочем, желающие всегда находятся.

Зеленое здание за заднем плане, если вы не знали - это и есть знаменитый Государственный Музей Эрмитаж. Это только одно из его зданий - музей на самом деле расположился на нескольких локациях, и обойти все филиалы невозможно даже за одну неделю.

Среди всякого оживляжа, сопровождающего мероприятие, была и концертная сцена с музыкантами, на которой по вечерам крутили разные фильмы (я попал на "Золушку") - зрителей было немного, но несколько горячих девушек все равно танцевали, несмотря на дождь! Музыка есть музыка, а молодость - это молодость! и безрассудство, которому мы аплодируем... Была дармовая раздача воздушных шаров от крупнейшего книжного ритейлера города - Буквоеда; уверен что они осчастливили в этот день немало детей.

Был кофейный киоск, возле которого все время толпилась небольшая очередь. Традиционно, были просторные качели - на которых можно уединиться со свежекупленной книжечкой и стаканчиком кофе (ну, теоретически; на практике, мочить свои книжки под дождем - ищите дурака!). Но детишки все равно соблазнялись, качели есть качели.

И еще один дивертисмент, о котором нельзя не упомянуть - киоск городской газеты "Петербургский дневник", где можно было бесплатно отправить в любой уголок России открытое письмо. Бесплатные открытки раздавались там же - с портретами известных писателей: Есенина, Шолохова, Бродского... (остальных я не запомнил). Я отправил две открыточки , причем первую из них я надписывал под струями дождя. Экстремальный опыт, хехе!
