You made a really great point. It would depend on the country you want to live in. And I think that's why retired people look for countries where it's cheaper to live, and that's why they migrate to countries like Mexico, which is having gentrification problems.

My wife saw me writing this post and added that she also needs a lot of money to spend, meaning that now a million is nothing!
