The food that we eat is essential for the growth and development of our body. It is important to eat nutritious food to increase our immune system. Knowing the nutritional value of food helps individuals select foods that meet their specific dietary needs and preferences. For example, someone looking to increase their protein intake can choose foods rich in protein based on nutritional information. We have been told to eat nutritious food since childhood days and so does the Sanskrit. Highlighting the various nutritious food, Sanskrit has following verses :
अन्नाद्द्शगुणं पिष्टं पिष्टाद्दशगुणं पयः |
पयसोSष्टगुणं मांसो मांसाद्दशगुणं घृतं ||
Annaaddashagunam pishtam pishtaaddashagunam payah.
Payasoshtagunam maaamso maamsaaddashgunam ghrutam.
Annaaddashagunam = Annaat + dashgunam.
Annat = cooked and ready to eat rice.
Dashgunam = ten times.
Pishtam = flour.
pishtaaddashagunam = Pishtaat + dashagunam,
Pishtaat = compared to flour.
Payah = milk,
Payaso = compared to milk.
Ashtagunam = eight times.
Mamso = meat, flesh.
maamsaaddashgunam = Maamsaat + dashagunam,
Maamsaat = compared to meat,
Ghrutam = Ghee, Cream.
i.e. Compared to cooked rice food items made out of kneaded flour are ten times more nutritious, and compared to food items of flour, Milk is ten times more nutritious. Meat is eight times more nutritious than milk, but Ghee (milk cream) is ten times more nutritious than meat.
From rice to flour to milk to meat and Ghee, it highlight the various food item that could help us in our overall development. But it is important that every person should consume the food in balanced quantity to avoid any body defects. Understanding the nutritive value of food empowers individuals to make informed choices about their diet, leading to better health outcomes, improved overall well-being, and a reduced risk of diseases.
