Noble Words : Let your generosity be your legacy !
Like many other people, I also admire Ratan Tata. People have there reason to admire the great person. I admire him for his philanthropic endeavors. I read many of his stories. Ratan Tata is a well-known philanthropist, supporting various causes including education, healthcare, and disaster relief. His actions have had a positive impact on numerous lives, from providing affordable cars to supporting education and healthcare initiatives. Such personality render their services without expecting anything in return. To highlight such persona, Sanskrit has following beautiful lines :
अपेक्षन्ते न च स्नेहं न पात्रं न दशान्तरं |
सदा लोकहितासक्ता रत्नदीप इवोत्तमा ||
Apekshante na cha sneham na patram na dashaantaram.
Sadaa lokahitaasaktaa ratnadeepa ivottamaa.
Apekshante = expect, require.
Na = not.
Sneham = (i) love, respect. (ii) oil.
Paatram = (i) a pot (ii) a deserving person.
Dashantaram = (i) end of a wick of an oil lamp (ii) supply line of funds for charity.
Sadaa = always.
Lokahitaasaktaa = lokahita + aasaktaa.
Likahit = welfare of common people.
Aasaktaa = involved, devoted to.
Ratnadeepaa = self illuminating jeweled lamp.
Ivottamaa = iva + uttamaa.
Iva = like, similar to.
Uttamaa = honourable and righteous persons.
i.e. Just as a self illuminating jeweled lamp does not require oil, a lamp and a wick to brighten a place, in the same manner honourable and righteous persons devoted to the welfare of the society do their philanthropic work without expecting any respect in return of such work and do not differentiate between the deserving persons, as also do not depend upon others to finance their such activities.
The author has skillfully used the two meanings of the words 'sneha', 'patra' and 'dashantar' and used a simile of a jewel lamp for a philanthropic person, who uses his wealth for such work without expecting anything in return. The purpose of charity is to help others, not to get praise for oneself. Showing off changes the very purpose of charity. While making donations, one should avoid showing off or publicity as this reduces the benefits of the donation. Ratan tata has the wualities that mame him stand apart frommother philathropist. His death is a grest loss to Indian community.
