IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN TO BE SORRY…
Hmmmm, why do i feel like I’ve come across a topic like this before in the past, this should be last year if i’m not mistaken. Hmm, interesting, another week of a different controversial topic, lol. Honestly, I find this a little bit funny and I don’t think this is ending anytime soon. Honestly, there’s this Deja Vu feeling i’m having right now, and this is all about coming across a topic like this before, but then I can’t really recall which community hosted a prompt like this, either way, let’s get this started before the heat cools down…
Where the role of a teacher ends is a big controversial topic is always discussed and argued on every now and then. The truth is that this debate isn’t ending anytime soon, and that’s because there haven’t been any mutual agreements since this started. Just when we think there’s a consensus, we end up having a new point and view tossed into the picture and then we go over it again without getting tired…

Honestly, i have been worn out by this discussion. My answer still stands the same at any point in time. This whole discussion about whether a teacher’s role should end within the classroom or should go beyond is a baseless question. The answer is simple and straightforward. A teacher’s role is for life, as long as the title of a teacher stands, the role is forever. Simple and easy, the earlier we understand this fact the easier it is for us to build a better future for the generations to come. If this isn’t done, a lot is going to happen in the coming years…
Should a teachers role end inside the classroom???
As a once upon a time teacher, I honestly stand against the idea that a teacher’s role should end within the four walls of a classroom. I believe it should go beyond and that is because the role is for life…
If a teacher sees their pupil misbehaving outside the school premises and outside school hours, honestly they don’t have the authority to act on it, the truth is that they don’t have the right to instill discipline on such person/people because they are outside their jurisdiction, moreover they are not under the school authorities anymore. According to the law of the country, they don’t have the right to take any action, but then this is Nigeria, we need to neglect the law sometimes and do the right thing, including taking actions…
Some teachers are also parents, which means they also have one or two kids in a school. What if their children happens to be in that same situation some time in the near future and their school teacher decides to not do the right thing because whatever that’s happening is outside the schools jurisdiction and way beyond the school authorities. What if in that process of not doing the right thing, life or lives are lost. Do you think life will be easier with such attitude?
This is why i say we need to sometimes play outside the rule book. We need to look outside the payroll sometimes, especially when it comes to doing the right things. We also can’t blame those who refuse to take actions in situations like that. This is something i can relate to personally, and that’s because I’ve witnessed something similar happen in the past…

Imagine being held responsible for doing the right thing all because things didn’t go as planned. Nobody wants to be a victim of such circumstance, which is why i said i’d understand if some teachers decide not to take any disciplinary measures against any pupil outside school premises or jurisdiction…
In summary, I think this is where we need to apply a higher level of education and maturity. To be on a more safer side, it is better to just use words and not exercise any disciplinary measures outside the school walls, that way you will be safe from any unfortunate circumstances that can happen…
In conclusion, it is better to be safe than sorry. May we not be doomed and crucified for doing the right thing at the right time…
