For me, that decision came at a time when I felt stuck between who I was becoming and who I wanted to be. I was still a student, juggling school work, personal issues, and the quiet pressure of trying to figure out what my future would look like. Choosing to learn hair styling wasn’t something I rushed into. It wasn’t because everyone was doing it or because social media made it look glamorous. It came from a place of wanting to add value to myself, wanting to become more independent, and wanting to build something that would outlive school stress or temporary situations. So I walked into the world of hair revamping, colouring, ventilation, styling, and ins

tallation with a mix of fear, excitement, and determination.

The beginning wasn’t easy. I questioned myself sometimes, Will I be good at this? Will people trust me? Can I combine this with school? But as I continued, I realised something beautiful, you can do anything if you truly determined yourself to do it.
This decision didn’t just give me a skill; it shaped my character. It disciplined me. It steadied me. It made me more intentional about my time and energy. Learning a trade automatically forced me to grow up in ways I didn’t expect. I started staying in my lane more, not because I was isolating myself, but because I finally had something meaningful occupying my mind and hands. When you’re busy chasing purpose, drama becomes boring. Gossip feels childish. And moving with the wrong crowd becomes a waste of precious time.

Another beautiful thing this decision brought into my life is new connections. Hair has a way of opening doors to conversations, friendships, opportunities, and even networks that you would never meet in your normal daily routine. Through styling, installation, and revamping, I’ve interacted with people from different backgrounds, different personalities, and different stories. Some of them have encouraged me, some have inspired m

Choosing to learn a trade while still a student has also taught me balance. I’m learning to manage my time, handle appointments, attend classes, and still show up for myself emotionally and mentally. I’m not yet perfect, but it’s progress. And that progress is something I’m grateful for.

Looking back, this one decision built a new version of me, more focused, more peaceful, more financially aware, and more responsible. It makes me proud that I didn’t wait until after school to start building the life I want. I took a step, and that step is still transforming me.

If there’s anything I’ve learnt, it’s that growth sometimes begins the moment you choose to invest in yourself. And for me, learning hair styling wasn’t just a trade, it became a turning point.
