Over the weekend, I was privileged to attend a wedding ceremony of my friend's sister and it was nothing short of amazing. I witnessed lots of cultural display at the event and I was amused by how ignorant I am of my own culture. Even the delicacies that were prepared were wow and I had little or no idea of most of it. Now, let's go into full details of how it went.
met someone new
My friend had called me some weeks ago to inform me of her sister's wedding and told me that the material was available for purchase, of which I bought and also informed me to please come and help me out with some chores as she won't be available to do them because she's her sister's chief bridesmaid. I agree because that's the least I could do to reward her for all the help she's been rendering to me in school.
Our paths crossed last year in a very unusual way and since the, she's been nothing short of amazing. She had reminded me on Thursday and asked if I was prepared to come the next day and I told her that I was a hundred percent ready and finally, Friday came and in the evening I set off to her place and arrived shortly. I was introduced to her parents and siblings and other people who were there to assist her in the preparation.
friends of the bride
She offered me a drink and took me to the room to change up and we went out to join the others in doing chores. I was assigned to a task of wrapping fufu while others did different task. More students and friends of the bride came and we all did the chores together and it made it easy for us to finish soon and rest so we could wake up very early the next morning and continue with the work.
What we did in Friday were the basics, Saturday was the main deal where lots of work was required. We woke up by 3:30am and continue with the chores. I washed and chopped waterleaf, peeled cassava, plantain and everything peelable. Also, I washed the dishes and was sent to buy brush, toothpaste and bathing soap for those who didn't come with theirs and I shared it accordingly to those that requested for it when I was back.
back to work
When the food was ready, fried and jellof rice to be precise, I packed them them neatedly into foil plates, ready to be served. I saw different delicacies that were prepared and my mouth was wide open, I had little or no idea about some and the likes include Ekpang Nkukwo, Asa Iwa, Oto Mboro, Ayan Ekpang. These are the ones I can remember to list and other foods that were prepared are fried rice, jellof rice, rice and stew, white soup and pounded yam, melon soup, okro soup, Afang soup, atama soup, editan soup, roasted plantain and red oil, roasted maize and pear, porridge plantain and a host of others.
different delicacies on a table set
The cook and her team did a great job and I must commend them for that. By 2pm everything was set and the occasion started by 3pm. I had my meal, had my bath and got dressed and went to the event place. I witnessed lots of cultural display like the Ekpe cultural display, drama, dance and the grand entrance of the groom and bride in our culture and also witnessed my friend's sister got hitched traditionally to the love of her life. The event was a huge success and at the end of the event, we were given souvenirs as "Thanks for coming".
bride and groom on duty
My friend thanked me for the help and also offered me money for transport fare back home but I declined it with reasons. I went home shortly and had my rest. It's been a busy weekend, I never thought I'd be that engaged as I had planned to have a good sleep and rest after my last Examination for the first semester of my first year in school but the reverse was the case.
I'm grateful to God for the success of the event and granting everyone journey mercies back to their respective homes and also to you for sticking by and engaging on my post.
