Movie Review: "The Diplomat" Directed By John Abraham
John Abraham has always been one of my favourite Indian actors, and I always loved his performance, especially when he acted the hero part. Wait, I think I have never seen him as the villain in any Indian movies, and so, he's one of a kind for me in such a genre of movies.
He directed another beautiful one that was out recently and on Netflix titled, "The Diplomat." I didn't think twice when I saw his picture, and that immediately led me to download and watch this movie because I knew I was in for an intriguing ride.
The Diplomat is a movie about an Indian woman, Uzma (Sadia Khateeb) who once had a failed marriage with a little daughter that needed to be performed an operation on. She moved to Malaysia to stay with a friend for work, and that was when she met a Pakistani guy, Tahir (Jagjeet Sandhi) who promised to marry her. He convinced her to go with him to Pakistan to meet his family and people.
On getting there, she got to know Tahir had many wives plus children and had been tricked into following him down to his hometown. She was forced into marriage with him, sexually assaulted her for days and was locked up. Through her brother, she duped Tahir into taking her to the Indian Embassy, where she pleaded with the government officials to help her; that was how she escaped from Tahir.
I love John Abraham's work at the embassy, being the director overseeing things. He is also an Indian and after listening to Uzma's story and knowing she was of a true identity and not like a spy, he volunteered to help her, ensuring she was safe at the embassy while necessary procedures were being carried out because according to the rules, she must be allowed to go back to India until the law grant her permission. But they needed strong evidence against Tahir and his people of how they abducted women and forcefully took them in while inflicting pain on them.
The problem now was for Uzma to defend herself at the court by speaking the truth that she never consented to such a marriage but was coerced into signing a marriage document against her will, but she was afraid of facing Tahir due to the tortures before she escaped from him. But India's president, who is also a mother, spoke to her, giving her the courage to confront Tahir and make sure she speaks the truth and is freed.

John Abraham delivered amazingly as a diplomat, providing safety for the time she'd been at the embassy and making sure Tahir and his people couldn't get through to her. At that point, especially after the court had granted Uzma permission to go back to India, Tahir decided to take revenge by killing her and ruining things, but none happened.
One thing I like about the movie is that, unlike other Indian songs that come with different choreography dances, such didn't happen here. I love the slow background music. There was no scene to bore you even once. It's a movie that constantly kept me on my toes anticipating what the next scene would bring.
Another best part is the Indian slogan that says, "The truth shall triumph," and it did when everyone knew the true story of Uzma and how she was trapped in a marriage against her will.

I love that the movie is based on a true life story and that's the kind I admire so much, especially wanting to know what had happened in history. I dislike Tahir for being such a cruel man who abused every woman in his home, and I felt for those who weren't saved just like Uzma, but I guess the focus was only on her rather than others.
There was not much violence, which I was actually expecting for the kind of movie where John Abraham was featured, but it was an interesting watch, which I did enjoy. It's raw and real and a lot to learn from it. The movie sheds light on real issues that are happening right now and serves as an eye-opener.
The Diplomat movie has compelling storytelling, and I don't think I can get tired of watching it over again. A solid execution. I would rate this 9/10 and recommend it to everyone who loves political movies like this one.
