How I have been affected by Social Media

Social media has been helpful in many ways, but it has also become destructive. It all depends on how we utilise it. There is always a limit to something, and if we aren’t careful enough, we might be controlled by it rather than taking control.

For many of us, social media has been a great safe haven in terms of socializing and learning. There are various platforms where we share lots of stuff about our lives; some of which others learn from, and then, we have places where we have fun, gist and communicate together. It has been a great place for us to air our voices and be valued.

Social media has been helpful to me. For instance, there is a platform called Pinterest that I have come to love. It’s a place where I get different styles for my native attire and other stuff that I have made in reality. Whenever I needed to do something, Pinterest is where I go for ideas, either for hairstyles, outfits, matching colours, scarves, etc.

Other platforms like Hive have also been a great place for me because I have met people whom I never knew I could meet in the physical world. Like, I am so grateful for such an opportunity, as it means we aren’t just communicating online, but made the effort to meet offline, and that has been an amazing one.

Social media is a good place to be but it’s also a toxic place. I remember how I used to feel bad about myself whenever I watched people flaunting their lifestyles and achievements. This usually makes me go to bed feeling unworthy and unappreciative until I felt it one day that this wasn't supposed to be like this.

I got to realise later that most of what I tried crying over were things that weren’t real. Some people will only show you one part of themselves without knowing the struggles they are going through. When my eyes opened, I made sure not to let social media dictate my happiness.

Today, I only watch good content that edifies, and whatever would make me compare, I steer clear of as soon as possible. I don’t feed my eyes with irrelevant content, and this is more reason I have deleted most apps on my phone, including setting boundaries on what I search for online.

Social media can both be advantageous and disadvantageous depending on its usage by the user. There are choices we make in life and what we choose to do will determine who we are.

Social media is a very helpful tool but if it's not used with caution and schedule, it can waste one's time
