A compelling case
Mandating checkups for everyone is a good thing; in fact, it will help people know their health status and also prevent some untimely deaths here and there because most people don’t bother checking their health status, which I am not excluded from.
I don’t remember the last time I had to go to the hospital all by myself to check my health status because I feel like I am healthy, and this has been almost everyone’s mindset; most of us believe that since we are not on a sick bed, we are healthier; meanwhile, some people are just like a walking corpse because what is going on in their body could kill them, but since they don’t fall sick, they believe they are healthy.

The truth is that if the government could give such an order and make it compulsory for everyone, then they are doing us nothing but good so that most people who are supposed to die young could prevent that from happening. And this mandate checkup could only work for people if the payment is not much or if they can make it free, which means there would be no excuse for anyone not to do it.
This prompt reminds me of a friend of mine who died recently; it happened late last year, and I wasn’t aware of what happened until recently. I was just at home scrolling on the internet, and I stumbled on someone’s post with a banner of my friend that says “gone so soon.”.
I didn’t believe it, so I quickly went to her page to see if that was a joke, but when I got there, I was surprised that all her sisters had posted it, and one of them said that they were talking a day before she died and there was nothing wrong with her, only for them to get the bad news in the morning that she complained of a headache and then took paracetamol and then went to bed, and she never woke up again.
It was very sad news for me because I was still planning on taking some clothes to her shop; she was a fashion designer.
If such mandated checkups truly existed, I am sure she would have gone to the hospital immediately; she was feeling sick, but most people would rather do self-medication at home rather than going for a proper medical check. Well, I don’t blame them because by the time the doctors give them bills for the checkup, they would end up dying if they don’t see money to treat themselves.

If the checkup were to be free, then I would support the government to arrest anyone who fails to check their status at least once in a year. It is not too much to see what is going on in our body system.
I know some people wouldn’t have the chance to go for the checkup, probably because of their work, but once they pay fines, they would find time to go for it; after all, it is for their own good.
If it were possible to make checkups mandatory, it should be done. I could not agree any less with what you said.
At least to prevent some people from untimely deaths, it will be nice if the checkups were cheap or even free but I doubt if that can happen here in Nigeria
