Ya tenía tiempo de no leer una novela policial, a pesar de ser uno de mis géneros favoritos. Me tope con este título en una feria y al ver que estaba en oferta, decidí darle una oportunidad. Fue publicado en 2018 y escrito por Walter Mosley. En su contraportada menciona que ganó el Premio RBA de Novela Policiaca 2018.

It had been a while since I had read a detective novel, even though it is one of my favorite genres. I stumbled upon this title at a fair and seeing that it was on sale, I decided to give it a try. It was published in 2018 and written by Walter Mosley. On its back cover it mentions that it won the 2018 RBA Crime Novel Prize.

Sinopsis: Se nos cuenta la historia de Joe King Oliver, un ex policía de Nueva York al que se le tendió una trampa, cumplio condena pero luego de unos meses pudo salir libre. Años después, en una nueva faceta de detective, apoyado por su hija, recibe 2 casos importantes, la defensa de un activista acusado de matar a dos policías y la de una carta, en la que el certifica que si lo traicionaron hace años. Desde ese momento Oliver vivirá unos días al límite para tratar de solucionar ambos problemas.

Synopsis: We are told the story of Joe King Oliver, a former New York cop who was set up, served time but after a few months he was able to go free. Years later, in a new facet of detective, supported by his daughter, he receives 2 important cases, the defense of an activist accused of killing two policemen and a letter, in which he certifies that he was betrayed years ago. From that moment on, Oliver will live a few days on the edge to try to solve both problems.

La trama nos muestra al ahora detective, analizando los casos, hablando con testigos, recibiendo apoyo de aliados y descubriendo los giros que tienen cada caso; y lo que puede significar la traición en cada situación. A su vez, los problemas pasados de su vida lo seguirán buscando, como su relación complicada con las mujeres.

The plot shows us the now detective, analyzing the cases, talking to witnesses, receiving support from allies and discovering the twists and turns of each case; and what betrayal can mean in each situation. At the same time, past problems in his life will continue to haunt him, such as his complicated relationship with women.

Es una novela policial bastante arquetípica, lo único que cambia es el tramo final pues usa métodos distintos a los usuales para la resolución. Es interesante ver al detective dejar todos los protocolos que tiene un ex-policía para resolver los casos y comenzar a ver a mayor detalle de ambos. Por otro lado, me gusta ver que a pesar de los avances de la tecnología, todavía se pueda hacer un caso de detective típico adaptado a los tiempos modernos, usando nuevas herramientas y métodos.

It is a fairly archetypal detective novel, the only thing that changes is the final stretch as it uses different methods than usual for the resolution. It is interesting to see the detective leave all the protocols that an ex-cop has to solve the cases and begin to see more detail of both. On the other hand, I like to see that despite the advances in technology, you can still do a typical detective case adapted to modern times, using new tools and methods.

Creo que hay un problema con la cantidad de personajes, especialmente en el lado de los villanos, pues no se profundiza y al ser variados, se tiende a confundir los nombres y sus acciones.

I think there is a problem with the number of characters, especially on the villain side, as it doesn't go in depth and being varied, you tend to confuse the names and their actions.

En general es un libro entretenido para leer en una tarde tranquila, pero no esperar más que eso.

Overall it is an entertaining book to read in a quiet afternoon, but don't expect more than that.
