Lo normal es que salvo por saber quién ganó, no preste mucha atención al Nobel de Literatura, pero tras ganarlo Han Kang, autora coreana, el año pasado y ver varias reseñas en Youtube de sus libros me anime a leer esta novela corta. Publicada en 2007.

Normally, except for finding out who won, I don't pay much attention to the Nobel Prize for Literature, but after Korean author Han Kang won it last year and I saw several reviews of her books on YouTube, I decided to read this short novel. Published in 2007.

Sinopsis: Yeong-hye que hasta cierto momento había sido una esposa abnegada a su marido, sufre unos tenebrosos sueños que la hacen tomar una decisión, dejar de comer carne. Esto le hará enfrentar una oposición desde varios lados, como su esposo y su familia; mientras ella va yendo hacia un rumbo inesperado.

Synopsis: Yeong-hye, who until a certain point had been a devoted wife to her husband, suffers from dark dreams that lead her to make a decision: to stop eating meat. This will cause her to face opposition from various sides, such as her husband and her family, while she heads in an unexpected direction.

La novela está separada en 3 partes, y en cada una tendremos a un narrador distinto. Primero narra el esposo de Yeong-hye, en la segunda su cuñado y en la tercera su hermana mayor In-hye. Por tal, veremos cómo el cambio es percibido por esos 3 personajes.

The novel is divided into three parts, each with a different narrator. The first is narrated by Yeong-hye's husband, the second by her brother-in-law, and the third by her older sister In-hye. Thus, we see how the change is perceived by these three characters.

Cada uno describe lo que el cambio ha provocado en ellos; a su vez, vemos como en una cultura donde el individualismo no es tan aceptado, la resistencia a la decisión hecha por Yeong es fuerte. Desde su esposo hasta su familia.

Each describes what the change has done to them; at the same time, we see how, in a culture where individualism is not so accepted, resistance to Yeong's decision is strong, from her husband to her family.

Dicho eso, la novela es más profunda de lo que pueda parecer pues no solo muestra la reticencia al cambio, sino la lucha de una persona que no sabe cómo escapar del control de su sociedad o personas cercanas. Tan pocas opciones tiene que llegará a sucesos inesperados.

That said, the novel is deeper than it may seem, as it not only shows the reluctance to change, but also the struggle of a person who does not know how to escape the control of her society or those close to her. She has so few options that she ends up in unexpected situations.

También el último arco, dedicado a las reflexiones de la hermana mayor, nos permitirá conocer más de la infancia de la protagonista, y los posibles motivos del rumbo de su vida. En cierta manera la novela me recuerda a La metamorfosis de Kafka, pues como un personaje se va transformando en algo ajeno a la sociedad, ya que esta es incapaz de aceptarla.

The last arc, dedicated to the reflections of the older sister, also allows us to learn more about the protagonist's childhood and the possible reasons for the course her life has taken. In a way, the novel reminds me of Kafka's The Metamorphosis, as one character is transformed into something alien to society, which is unable to accept her.

Si bien las ideas que explora la novela son diversas, es sencillo de leer, lineal y con una narración que se entiende sin problemas.

Although the ideas explored in the novel are diverse, it is easy to read, linear, and with a narrative that is easy to understand.

A pesar de que la novela es corta, menos de 170 páginas, sus ideas que transmiten se mantendrán en la memoria de sus lectores. Recomendable lectura.

Despite the fact that the novel is short, less than 170 pages, the ideas it conveys will remain in the memory of its readers. Recommended reading.
